...on Cubase 4/Saffire Pro 40. For some odd reason I got a recording wrong: instead of one track for the BD mic and one track for the "in front of kit" mic I got a stereo track with BD on L channel and FoK on R channel.
I really wanted the drums in mono, centred in the mix, but now have BD hard left, kit hard right. This makes the BD sound disjointed from the rest of the rhythm.
Is it possible to Copy/Duplicate the track, then switch L and R channels on the Copy, then play them both together to sound right? |

Many thanks all, particularly to Ted/Mr Noisy for phoning me up and suggesting I email him the track in question to split. I tried everything again and again and eventually managed to Export L and R channels to 2 new Mono tracks then set different EQ on the "Bass drum" channel to the "Rest of the kit" channel, but I had to go deep into uncharted territories! All the drums are now central in the mix, and sounding fine. I have made a note of what to do if I need to do this again! Thanks again! |

Cheers folks, it's great to feel I am not alone, getting Pro 40 to bus up with Cubase is a frightmare which baffles even Focustite's techs!
When I recorded the track I tried to set up a mono track for each of the two mics, but it gave me 2 identical stereo tracks with BD on left and kit on right of each. It makes the BD sound disjointed from the kit, and in the fast interplay with toms it does not sound like it is part of the rhythm due to being so far apart. Also the kit mic needs to have plenty of middle and treble but NOT too much bass (for clarity), but as they are on the same track this leaves the BD sounding boxy and empty.
For this reason I now reckon that splitting the stereo tracks onto 2 separate mono tracks will be the best way to sort this out and improve the bass drum's tone and integrity with the kit.
I have some chores to do this morning, then will fire up the studio again and see what happens.

Captain. You could install Reaper and see if you get more joy with it. I use mine above anything else now. You can use Reaper for 30 days, then you get a nag screen until you pay for it. It's pennies anyway. It updates regardless. Try it and if it works better keep it on the hard drive. |

I think it is the usual problem to with with Pro 40 not really working with Cubase, a few months ago even their techs took an hour to get sound out. I keep trying all sorts of things. Eventually I found that Cubase allows me to flip L & R so I did on a copy, so one track L R, the other R L, though this might bring a balance, but even still the BD is on the left and kit on the right.
Tried exporting the track, but either got Mono with no sound, or stereo as already exists. Will try some of these other ideas tomorrow but right now my brain is bursting. Cheers Folks! |

In Reaper you can right click on the the wav file, go to 'properties' and check the 'make file mono' option. Maybe you could do that.

Or create a duplicate copy of the stereo track, then pan one of them hard left and the other hard right. Then Creat two mono group tracks and set the output of each of the stereo tracks to one of the mono group tracks. Mute the stereo tracks and it's done.

Try exporting the track and in the options use stereo split ....don't forget to set the left and right locators |

It may be that you have a phase problem which made the pair sound funny when you combined them. I have no idea how you flip the phase of a track in cubase though... |

Problem is I have not used it for four months so I am rusty, and the Pro 40 is still a relatively new and tricky thing for me. |

Cheers James, it has been giving me trouble all day! I tried centering but it went odd when I mixed. Have tried all sorts of tricks but have not yet been able to split the stereo.
I will have a go at sending stereo to a mono record, would I do this by Going to File > Export (as I do to mix down? |

Don't know about cuebase - in logic and Pro tools you can separate the stereo tracks.
Two options that will work thorough -
Just center the pan controls - you'll have a mono mix of kit/BD
Print a track of the kit as a mono bus - ie - send the stereo channel to a mono record track and record.
I'm sure you can split the stereo track though, surely? |
