I picked up a kit last week that needs a bit of work, great to get my teeth into a new project! I'm selling a few of the bits that came with it, but I would like some info on these if anyone knows....
The 'hats' are 16" 5 Star Super Zyns. I've had a pair of 15" 5 Star hats before, but I've never seen a 16" pair. I'm pretty sure they are actually hats, as they don't sound too great as crashes and seem too solid and heavy, around 1300g & 1320g (in comparison, my 16" Zildjian A Medium crash is about 1180g). They also have some smooth wear on the inside edges suggesting use as hats.
So, I think they are an original pair, but don't want to mislead anyone, so can anyone confirm whether there were such a thing as 16" 5 star hats??

Somebody will love those as a pair of hats.

Thanks everyone for the information! So it's likely they could originally have been marching cybals or 'extra heavy's without the straps, which I guess would have made them marching cymbals aswell. I suppose that makes sense with the weights being so similar rather than a heavy bottom and considerably lighter top.
How do they sound? I've only stuck them on a stand for 5mins to try out, not really played 'em, but they're quite solid and 'chicky', not much of a slosh.
So, marching cymbals or otherwise, they're obviously a pair so I won't split them or anything. Thanks guys!!

My guess would also be marching cymbals. How do they sound?

The 78/79 Premier catalogue has 14s and 15s marked as pairs but the 16s are Marching cymbals model number 376.
So probably as i said marching cymbals that have been used as Hats or a special order.

Will have a look at the catalogues later Bjorn but suggest they could be marching cymbals that have been used as Hats. I have Ufip Class series 14" Heavy Hats and they weigh 1300g and 1500g.

According to the 1972 Premier catalog, they made a 16" pair "extra heavy" (straps extra) in 5 Star Super Zyn, but in standard weight only up to 15". Doug
