premier 40s snare

premierpete	Posted - 11/03/2012 : 21:24:44 Hi all I bought a brass shell about two years ago thinking it was a late super ace.I asked on the forum to everyones amuzement if anyone had the missing parts knocking about and From the replys i received i realised this was not going to be an easy task or even if this restoration was even possable Two years and three doner shells later i have finished my first project. It is all original except for the snare wires.I picked these up from the drum fair and had to custumize them to fit.The snare wirer had four more strands to it.two wires each side were ground off using a bench grinder, while dipping the wirer in water reguarly to stop the solder melting. capt.wierd	Posted - 26/03/2012 : 14:52:31 Hi Guys, Here is a breakdown of what's what in the late 40s snare dept, In the 1948 catalog, no snares are listed by number or size until you get to the price sheet, White, Black Duraplastic snares are all listed as #2s, 14 X 6 inches at 24 quid. There is no mention of a #1 or any other snares Now, I can't find it, but I thought I had the 1947 catalog or maybe it was just a price sheet, but the #1 snare was listed, it was a 14 X 5 1/2 inch snare, I have what I believe is the #1. It's just a plain Ivory painted shell with a lever snare mechanism. In the 1951 catalog, #1s, are listed as 14 X 5 1/2 and further delineated by #1W, white Duraplastic, #1B, Black Duraplastic, #1C, Chrystal Flash, #1P, White Pearl, #1K Black Pearl The #2 was 14 X 6 1/2, and had the same delineation as the #1 WITH THE #2 AS THE PREFIX The 14 X 6 1/2 Chrome snare was designated as the #3, Metal snare The 14 X 8 wood snare was the #4 no further info was given but you can assume the colour and wrap designation were the same as the #1s and #2s All these snares in the black and white catalog of 1951 had the late 40s badge, "Made and Registered in England

I couldn't possibly give you an identification of these snares that you have, I am absolutely no expert/authority/oracle/arbiter (on anything). I would refer you to Capt W, he seems to know his onions, I'm a shallot man myself. I did once have correspondence with you on the subject of 18" BDs as I recall. Didn't you get two nice marching tenors (black and silver) for an outrageously small outlay? I think I sent you full instructions for conversion including handy exploded Haynes style elevations. And wasn't your name Josie at the time???? Tell you what, send me the pair, I'll convert one for you and keep the other. That may be quicker! Spart

Spart Hi Spart Yes I was the lucking winner and you are right about the snare being a bit of a mismatch, but i am sure it must have been manufactured that way.Would i be right in saying my bass snare from the original post is a mark one super ace?If so the red snare must be an hybreed because of the later handle.I am hoping the snare wires are not to stretched. I am looking foreward to receiving the snare and having a good look at it.I have two shells to chooe from for the restoration,one bass and the other ivory,i am toying with the idea of getting the painted one sprayed black.I will post pics when it is finished. The one I have with the same lugs has the first block badge. I would expect this red one to have the same. Reads "Made and registered..." , gold coloured edging, brass I assume. Same as your one above. I believe those lugs became obsolete in the late 40s. Spart [/quote HI Spart The snare came paint free.I have another excactly the sane with the floe beam but with a broken handle and a ivory example with lugs and hoops no F/B.I was thinking if i could get some wires for it i might try and get a handle cast or i might try and get another doner off the bay Buns at the ready
