Hi all, wonder if anyone wld be able to assist here. Basically I have the opportunity to purchase a complete Premier 58 outfit. Its all 100% original, including, hardware, heads, Zyn cymbals, stool, sticks, brushes - the original heads have been used, but only light. Apparently it was bought new around 1966 and stored ever since. It is 20/12/16/14 snare in burgandy pearl. My question is what sort of worth wld this have - how much wld be a good offer price? Any assistance wld be much appreciated. `thank you.

I would love to think so....and maybe the vintage Premier kits are starting to attract the attention (ie price) they deserve...

I've always been at a slight loss as to the price difference between vintage Premier kits and some of the other (mostly American) brands....sure the kids fall for that advertising/branding schlep, but I always thought us vintage fanatics were connoisseurs of true quality ...

Apparently someone local walked in and handed over the money - happy man I bet. They were "time warp" condition it has to be said. Perhaps history is more important than price if you have the readies available
andyyouell Posted - 08/04/2012 : 19:40:54
The shop keeper is happy, that's for sure.....!

I wonder who shelled out 800 for that? Maybe the vintage Prem market is starting to look up ;-)

Nah, We're a cheap lot

I have enough drums to tide me over for awhile, well until the next console, "ahem", rolls around

that should have read "do not need" apologies
jg20 Posted - 29/03/2012 : 22:13:11
rollingthunder, no I have not talked my myself out of it I genuinally do need another kit, I also don't have the room for another kit, but agree it is a nice sounding kit

Kruppers, if you are interested here is the shop details http://www.holmesmusic.co.uk/cgi-bin/blog/?cat=8 The contact is Paul who will help you out.
rollingthunder Posted - 27/03/2012 : 07:56:59
You talked yourself out of that very nicely.
A pristine, great sounding kit that would only have increased in value, or a run of the mill snare drum.
You pays your money and takes your choice I suppose.
andyyouell Posted - 27/03/2012 : 07:14:31
Won't sell at that price. It doesn't say Ludwig on the front!
Twotoms Posted - 26/03/2012 : 23:32:55
Not that local - I used my "little grey cells"....as Hercule Poirrot would say.
jg20 Posted - 26/03/2012 : 23:22:27
Two Toms you are correct -I have just looked too - you must be local!! So at £795 anyone going to have a punt? I was interested, but I don't really need another kit - vintage or otherwise. Just picked up a Luddy 400 today (1966) so happy with that and in excellent nick as well - all original inc. snare wire and Atlas stand. Having viewed the Premier kit I can confirm its everything it says - it's all there in what I wld say is 11/10 condition for its age. For a Premier fan/collector it wld be a gem.....
Twotoms Posted - 26/03/2012 : 21:29:10
It's on at £795 on the shop's website....
kruppers Posted - 24/03/2012 : 09:34:42
Looks lovely. I'd snap his hand off TBH. Its got all the appeal of vintage kit but is practically brand new. I never got to own one of these when I was young and would buy just to get that moment. I'd also use it in one of my bands regularly. So, if you dont buy it, let me know!
Resonator72 Posted - 23/03/2012 : 23:27:05
Most kits on eBay at low prices have extra holes, rust, hoops missing etc etc
Seems to me we should all value our vintage english kits a fair bit higher than the bargain bin that eBay has become, and led us all to look to for comparitive pricing when considering anything. Or else we'll all be responsible for devaluing English kits even more (let's face it they're as good as American counterparts but at 1/3 price). 450-500 seems right to me, looks in good con and we all know it'll sound lovely. You wouldn't get an entry level modern fepos kit for much less, I know which one I'd rather be sat behind.
jg20 Posted - 23/03/2012 : 22:21:19
Andy, tks for comments - yours looks very nice I have to say. My limit is £400. So we will have to see. I do a few jazz/big band gigs so as you say wld go well for that. The heads wld need replacing I suppose as its still g original ones on it. I already have one of the original Premier hardware/snare cases so that wld go with it, along with about 4 or 5 of the Premier flush base cymbal stands.
andyyouell Posted - 23/03/2012 : 20:51:46
I bought a black pearl transition era (1967) shell pack (20/12/16) like this earlier this year and paid 350. The burgundy pearl is beautiful and the matching snare puts this easily in the 450 - 500 mark.

I use my kit for jazz gigs regularly (using modern stands) - it looks and sounds fantastic.

If I was looking for a kit like this, I'd probably snap the sellers hand off at 500....
jg20 Posted - 23/03/2012 : 20:01:15
hmmm..... can't make my mind up! If you saw it you wld say, I want that just because of the condition and the fact everything is as per the catalogue listing, there is even the original catalogue included - just more a less as per the day it was bought - thats the appeal. I wld be taking forward some untouched history. Is it worth the asking price - don't know really. Food for thought!! . Plus I am a left handed player so the tom wld have to go into a snare stand if I decided to gig it, not a problem as such, but something to consider.
capt.wierd Posted - 21/03/2012 : 23:52:33
Ok Just a 3 piece, its a real mixed bag, old hoops, old badges, new lugs, nice condition, maybe £250 because of the colour, with snare another £200 plus, so yeah £500 ain't far from the mark. Tell them to throw in some cases and lunch
Bazarre Posted - 21/03/2012 : 14:16:51
Yes, lovely kit, especially with that cymbal arm, but in my view priced a bit too high. As others have said, £350 max.
Twotoms Posted - 21/03/2012 : 13:26:36
I think you could get a shell pack like this on ebay for under £350. ( sadly )
Jon Petersen Posted - 20/03/2012 : 16:57:17
I am not a collector - I am a player - so for me it is on the high side. That´s probably because I am not very interested in paying for the "collectable" in having 100% original hardware, heads, Zyn cymbals, stool, sticks and brushes.

Funny, but not what I would pay many pounds for. To me, the Pre-International thing is also pulling down. Ambassadors are nice, but I like to have the choice, like with wires for the snare - I´d prefer a HiFi to Royal Ace for the same reason.

I think, that the kit as such is around £400, but really - that is just me.

Other people might rate it higher, some probably even lower.

But it seems to be in very nice condition, and compared to what new kits or even other vintage kits costs, the £500 is probaby quite fair.

Regards

Jon

Hi Jon, they are looking at around £500 - wld that be reasonable?
Jon Petersen Posted - 19/03/2012 : 22:44:36
The lugs I prefer...

Very nice.

What is the price in the shop?

Twotoms Posted - 19/03/2012 : 22:01:35
Older badge and newer lugs. Transition kit between 1966 - 1968
drumdmc Posted - 19/03/2012 : 21:13:44
Nice kit there JG very good condition too, not many like that!
jg20 Posted - 19/03/2012 : 21:07:43
I have added a couple of photos of the kit I took today. Its a 54 not a 58-apologies! Its in good condition only the tom mount has had a couple of screw replacements. I hope the links below work - first time effort

Any comments wld be appreciated. Thanks John.

Regarding values of Pre-Internationals versus Internationals - I don´t think I have noted any difference in £. Condition is a lot more important. It is just for me, for practical use, I prefer Internationals. That I also like the later lugs better is only personal taste, an I know there are different opinions here.

Sounds like a very nice kit!

Tks for the info/advice so far. Regarding the pre ints. which it is, no problem for me there. I too like the 10 lug tuning option on the FT. If I did go for this set I am not too sure if I wld use it for giging anyway? I will try and take a photo tomorrow. Its more the fact that it is the original cpt set that has the interest.
capt.wierd Posted - 18/03/2012 : 18:06:38
Yeah Jon, especialy with a matching snare. I, differ with you on the pre-international floor tom, I like those ten lugers, nicer to tune And depending which Zyns, they are, could be a great enhancement
Jon Petersen Posted - 18/03/2012 : 17:52:02
To me, it makes a difference whether the toms are Pre-International or International.

Easiest to check is the 16" - does it have 10 lugs, the it is Pre-International.

If the kit is as nice as it should be, when the heads are barely used, and the collector-niceties of the paraphernalia, I would say that upwards of £400 wouldn´t be wrong.

The Zyns are likely to not be very good - although some people like their thin, washy sound. They won´t add much to the value if sold separately.

Regards

Jon

Well you need to post pics, they are a very desirable kit and colour. I bought one last year, post 67, paid around 250 quid, just the drums, 4, No snare, no extras, so there is starting point
