Ok,

for some reason I have gone from:

Open up Mixcraft 5. Set up mics. Click Record.

to

Open up Mixcraft 5. Set up mics. Click Record. Kick computer and interface (not really.)

But I was down the studio "recording" some rough drum tracks about a month ago when something seemed to "break". I was getting stops/starts in my recording (live as I did it) and all sorts of things going crazy?! I hadn't changed ANYTHING. So anyway, I felt a little hungover and carried on drumming because I didn't have the patience with it.

Then I decided I would write my own material and started to record a rough song and it worked ok. (other than me forgetting bass wasn't plugged in or visa versa!) then tonight I went to work on the song more and there was no audio play back through my monitors at all. So I checked all the settings and they were as they were.

Now I have loads of options and not sure what I originally had and have got myself confused with it all. I cannot access the motu's own "programmes" ie Motu pci cuemix or something and some others. I get this message:

an error has occured in the AudioWire driver. The Audiowire driver was not found (18),

also sometimes just says "AudioWire driver not found"

I've re-installed the drivers and checked for updates. no such luck.

So also in mixcraft preferences. I have 3 options for clock source.

SMPTE (this plays back audio but sounds muffled what I recorded)
Internal (Same as above)
ADAT Optical (Im sure this is what I used to have it as but plays no audio whatsoever)

then I have the sample rates and samples per buffer to choose from on all three options?

I would really appreciate some help with this! I'm getting ready to throw it out of the window!!

Please note, I havn't dropped it or damaged it in anyway...

Thankyou for your time

Are you running any other pre-amps ahead of the interface (i.e. mic/line into pre-amp, pre-amp to interface)? I run through an 8 channel unit, then into a Saffire Pro-24 DSP and it all works fine, but had heard that you could get the pops and hissing if things weren't correctly routed.

BTW - if you do need a new interface the Saffire 24 is great and around £230 (IIRC)

But please note, I dont monitor in comming audio because I hadn't changed the buffers etc to prevent lag. I just listen to the instrument, so in theory my monitors shouldn't be making any noise WHILE recording?

when you say "the monitors clip"... what exactly do you mean: your monitor speakers or do you mean the vu/led meters on screen? (if the latter you've simply got too much gain hitting your converter. Trim the gain or put a pad in front and it should be fine. If you dont mean that I have no idea what you mean.

Right, I got my motu manual out and had a look at setting it up from scratch. From here it started to work. however after a little use, I work on some songs, then when playing back (after recording with a mic or TRS? cable straight into the interface) it seems to record ok but the monitors "clip" (Even though not in use) and when I play back I get a white noise? I can youtube a video if needed. I can only presume the interface is burgered. So do I have to shell out another £400?!? Motu were no help at all.

On the topic of apple, I had issues similar to this with my M-Audio firewire interface through Ableton Live on PC. Haven't had them on the mac though..
TrevCircleStudios Posted - 24/03/2012 : 10:00:48
id guess you'd have to send it back to the manufacturer.

Is there anywhere that looks at these/repaires them? Im going to pmt in norwich sunday and looking at interfaces
TrevCircleStudios Posted - 24/03/2012 : 09:21:31
I mean the firewire cable rather than the mains cable. Maybe do a fresh reload of all of the software, If it still isnt working things dont look good.
drummerant Posted - 23/03/2012 : 23:42:57
Thats never happened? Its always pligged in unless i move it and everything is switched off...
TrevCircleStudios Posted - 23/03/2012 : 19:40:38
In short, if you plugged it in or pulled it out when it was switched on... there's a good chance it's knackered.

What do you mean? lol. sorry, its always plugged in unless the computer is turned off. I only unplug it when I take it to the studio. Should I plug it in after loading the computer?

also just tried it in various firewire ports on my pc and it still aint workin!
jamesminion Posted - 23/03/2012 : 15:11:12
where you plug it in and it works, instead of having to mess about reloading and atsrting up things....
drummerant Posted - 23/03/2012 : 10:05:00
Sorry what is hot plugging?
TrevCircleStudios Posted - 23/03/2012 : 09:13:41
You didn't hot plug the firewire cable did you? If you did there is a very high risk that you have killed the firewire card.

I wouldn't say you 'need' an apple to do music but there's a reason most commercial studios use Macs... It just works. (fwiw MOTUs work great with mac too - no driver issues I've come across and I've specced the 8pre for a number of friends who are getting into music).
drummerant Posted - 22/03/2012 : 21:35:48
I have been very anti apple, but everyone seems to think that they are needed for music/art people. Is it worth looking into? Also maybe getting a new interface? I was shocked to see that the motu 8pre is still about £400!? Same as when I got it a few years ago!
theslingerland Posted - 22/03/2012 : 21:30:25
Oh god... Why can't Motu write drivers that are as reliable as RME....?!?!

Wish I could help - Not a PC man I'm afraid...
drummerant Posted - 22/03/2012 : 21:28:20
I can get into "Cuemix FX" but not either : MOTU PCI Audio Console or MOTU SMPTE Audio Console
drummerant Posted - 22/03/2012 : 21:23:54
I have just downloaded the new drivers (I thought I'd installed them but didnT!) Anyway, after installing and restarting pc this is the new message;

an error has occured in the AudioWire driver. Internal AudioWire driver logic error (15)
TrevCircleStudios Posted - 22/03/2012 : 21:17:04
have you reinstalled cuemix?
