Hi Folks!
This is my first post on the site. I'm about to embark on a 3 week UK tour in April and I'm looking for some advice/opinions any of you may have on coated drum heads. I use a coated on my snare as standard but as yet,I have not tried any coated heads on my toms.
I have a Pearl Masters BRX Birch shell kit with tom sizes 12" and 14".
I'm quite drawn to the Aquarian Modern Vintage and Remo Vintage Ambassador Series. For most of the set I play Vater Brromsticks, occasionally switching to light 7a sticks.
The band's sound is somewhere between Bill Callahan, Will Oldham-esque influenced county-folk and Herman Dune, Neil Young and the likes. We play a fairly dynamic set usually with small-ish PA systems with no mics on kit.
Any help or recommendations would be great!

Welcome to the forum B-S-B.
IMHO, if you are playing mainly broom sticks and no mics then I would be tempted to go for bog standard coated Ambassadors or perhaps the vintage flavour. If you want to warm the sound up further go with the same coated head on the reso side. |

Sounds to me like you're on the right lines with your thinking there Mr. Bandit!
I use Renaissance Ambassadors (smiliar to the Vintage?) regularly on similar tom sizes and they sound great - real open and plenty of tone and sustain, which you could well benefit from if using no mic's.
I've always been surprised at just how robust they are too. They do last very well. |

+1 for fyberskins. especially thinner ones (diplomats)
G2 in my experience don't sound very 'full' unless there is a fair bit of force on them.if your using the broomsticks I would have thought a thinner head will make a more pleasing tone? |

I like coated heads (Evans Coated G2, generally) but have switched to Remo Fiberskyns on my toms. They sound warm, resonant, and pack a punch when you hit them. Perfect for the Broomsticks. |

I use calf vellums on one of my compact kits, and the tone is gorgeous, very warm and no plasticky "tack" on the impact. www.eddieryancustromdrums.co.uk |

Presuming a three week jaunt is going to inflict a bit of wear and tear and you are only taking one set of heads...
I have used both the AMVs and Vint As. Both are quite thick, the AMVs will probably stand up to anything you throw at them, particularly the mediums.
Vint As were excellent at low tuning on 12s and 14s (FT).
Personally I always go back to straight Ambassadors, old dog and all that. The go to coated head for all things in my book.

Hello and welcome. Both of those head ranges should serve you well, perhaps with a bit of Moongel or Blu-Tack if you need to control the tone subtly. You could also consider Fyberskyns, these have a slightly harder attack if you require more definition. |
