Just got hold of these

22. 13, 16, 14snr, I'm guessing from the 70s.
really heavy, well-made drums, excellent hardware for the day, and very loud! Anyone got any experience with these?

That kit looks stunning Andy! Even louder than acrylics you reckon? My vintage Zickos acrylic kit is probably my loudest kit - and that's with evans hydraulics on! When they're worn out I'm looking forward to putting some single-ply ambassardors on to make em sing! |

Oh - by the way:
Frederik, the Crown Prince of Denmark, had a mahogany ASBA in sizes 18, 12 and 14 as a kid.
A real dream kit, fitting for a royalty.
It now sits in "Slagtøjscentret", Copenhagens best drum shop. Not for sale, I am told....

No, Capelle has nothing to do with ASBA - except being french, of course - two entirely different companies, and very different drums too.
Asbas in wood are thin-shelled with reinforcement rings, whereas Capelles are usually thick shells in african mahogany. Capelle also sold under the Orange brand for a couple of years.

Lovely to see this kit Jim. I used to have an identical kit which I sold to Bob Spearing (http://www.asbadrums.com/drums/bobspearing.htm).
They were lovely drums but I always felt the ASBA acrylics were just a little too fragile. When I stripped my brown kit to clean it I was amazed at the amount of flex in the shells - far more than I ever saw on Ludwig, Sonor or Pearl acrylics that I had over the years.

Asba (France) were famous for stainless steel and fibre-glass drum kits, later re-launched as Capelle but I think only wood drums by then. Too quirky for some, but very well made, and their pedals were very highly rated, especially the Caroline bass drum pedal. |

Lovely kit! I've never heard of them. It was more common for other vintage drum brands other than Ludwig to be clear acrylic. That's an unusual colour. |

Andy Youell will be your man for Asba drums. Nice looking kit i'm sure there was one like that for sale on the Bay a few years back. |
