thinking this summer of running a few restoration videos on youtube.I've looked at a few videos on drum building but all seem very drab and not very informative at all.Most show machinary that nobody has at home backed by some mad metal music dubbed over at painfull levels.
I want to take the subject further as some of you know already I've been refurbing vintage kits for years,picked some tips up and made a few of my own,although I now have the eqiupment to do the work I can still show how to refurbish a cherished kit with very little,as Jeramy knows the dish washer tablet is one of the best (look in jans Rhythm mag for that one).I think a less serious aproach would be good and I am afterall a qualified trainer so might as well use some of the skills I've learnt and pass them on.
things I would cover are holes and how to fill them,wrap refinishing,bearing edge repair,maybe even one on servicing the prem 2000 with all its little faults such as the jammed screws,breaking springs etc etc but also try to make it fun and enjoyable to watch.
so what ya think,good idea?,what would you like to see? |

Sounds like an interesting idea.
There are younguns into the vintage stuff. I recently sold my 1972 Rogers kit to a college student (must've been late teens/early twenties), he wanted the vintage sound for his recordings. There is a future for the past! |

Rhythm came up with this in Jan?
Iv been using washer tabs for years here Dave get a load of lugs in a poly bucket in with a tab or two and then in with the boiling water it sure as hell cleans them up!!

I'm thinking more classic than vintage,we don't have a classic drum section here 
for example I sold a signal elite to a band in France called Wido,you can clearly see it in this video,Dug this video proves at least 1 exists.

Wes the drummer loves the kit and wouldn't use anything else,so this is a modern band using a classic Premier kit,recently I was over in Liverpool at a rehersal studio where a Hayman was in use,drumheduk mentions a 2000,well thats not strictly vintage is it but lots of bands are using them,Paul doulsette from Matchbox 20 has his own vintage collection thats used for recording!
so there are young guys out there that use classic and vintage kits,plus all us lot,also talking to a guy that deals in synths aparently theres a bit of a revolution going on,old analoque synths are being bought up not by collectors but young bands to look cool!
I also believe that bands are moving away from your DW's and run of the mill kits as a kind of self expression,and what better way than a Prem elite,Hayman,Slingerland. |

Good point Dug - but do you think the young uns turn into the older chaps and then notice the vintage gear ?!!

Would it be correct to say that interest in vintage drums is largely via an older breed of chap?? I've never met a young un who cared. |

Dave,if I told you that you wouldn't buy the mag!or watch the videos,can't give away all the secrets can I lol.
I must say and have mentioned this to Jeremy before that the articles in Rhythm mag are fantastic,these videos would compliment them and go one step further,its more widely accepted that old drums still sound good,we all know that (and so do DW,,,,cough,oops),so instead of all the newbees getting out the black and deckers and cow hides lets show them how to do it,Rhythem with Jeremy has gone a long way to do this by bringing it to the attention of would be restorers,its to be applauded and encouraged. |

I thought everyone knew that. You take the heads off your Premier 2000, Luddy 400/Black Beauty etc. Then you shove the whole thing in the dishwasher and set it to hot wash. The snare will never be any use again, but boy it'll shine

Yes please, all of the above sounds perfect, especially on the vintage stuff, most modern stuff is very user friendly just keep it clean, lubed or tight, the older stuff can be mindblowing! I'm rebuilding a Premier parallel action at the moment and the internal springs are scream inducing. |
