I might have the chance to pick up some aluminium drum shells to make a kit.
Has anyone played a full aluminium kit? What was it like? It'll be a little step into the unknown, but it could be awesome.
I want to make something a little like the Spizz kits..
Thinking 18x14, 14x12 and 10x7. |

Apologies for the delay. I only found out about this thread from a friend of mine asking if I still went on this forum and that I had been mentioned by name so I thought I would at least find out.
I've been away from drumming for quite a while now but I decided not to sell my kit simply knowing I would eventually want to get back into it at some point and there is no such thing as 'too old'. Also once you have sold the best kit you will ever own you simply don't have that kit anymore.
I have occasionally taken the odd drum out of it's case just to look at it as you do and it is still perfectly in tune after months of not being touched so yes, I would still rave about this kit to anyone who cared to sit there and be bored by it. The sound was always my biggest love for aluminium shells simply because they are very resonant without any overtones or unwanted noise. An exceptionally clean sound in my opinion and to my ears. I once described it to someone as "you know how drummers might spend a long time in a studio tuning and playing with microphones and recording equipment til they get that full bodied, cean stuio sound? Well... it sounds like that."
In the response to the question of weight: Same as a wooden kit. Heavier, stronger material: thinner shells. Plus I weighed it.

mahogany (if it's the same african mahogany used on my pearl snare) would be my choice. mahogany sounds damn good to me. |

Echo are the guys I'm talking to about the shells.
It's a toss up between these and mahogany shells.
Both would be 18/14/10.
The aluminium would ideally have single flanged a clip hoops, the mahogany vintage maple hoops.
But I need to sell the kits I've already made first....

I think Echo drums make Alu kits, they where at last years Jobeky Drum Show.

FWIW, I made my own aluminium snare drum out of a strip of 3mm aluminium sheet, rolled and seam welded. Hardware from an old Remo snare.

Funny. I was looking at one of my Acros the other day and thinking "I wonder how light an aluminium kit would be and how would it sound?" Sounds like an interesting project!
