It's GOOD !!
Having briefly owned a couple of early 80s power-depth Royale APKs, I was pleasantly surprised. These toms had nasty round and rough bearing edges as well as jammy black painted insides.
I'm aware that the XPKs were always meant to be a step up, but I previously thought it was just in the veneer VS wrap aspect.
The mid 90s XPK toms I have with this little put together kit...

..are altogether a different story.
The insides are as beautifully finished as the outsides and the slightly undersized shells have splendidly cut bearing edges. I think the finish rivals a set of Mapex Orions I have in the hire stock, which are very much top of the range.
A golden age of quality for Premier, perhaps?

Exactly!
I was going to convert a 10 x 6 snare to the RT, but the 10x9 came up, and I guess a little bit more "whoom" is always useful.
I now have 3 matching snares - 14, 12 and 10 which I'll be putting with it.

Aaah I see. The badge down there does look a little strange but rather that than to start drilling extra holes and stuff, it looks like a nice conversion. 13x11, same as the floortom on the Artist Heritage Club.  |

make sure you put the new snare on gareth, or even the set would be better?
ps, i play a monster orion kit, took prefference over two DW's, sounds absolutely amazing, and correct the finish is second to none in my view, i'll mail you some pics, |

Absolutely correct. It was a 13x11 RT and I tuned it upside down and added two more leg mounts. The badges can be tapped round carefully.
My first attempt was with a Topaz colored one but I just won the natural one on ebay that matches the RT and (after a varnish) the BD, so I swapped the legs over.
I'm keeping my eyes peeled for either a 12x10 or 14x12 for a second floor tom.
I'll have a big little kit ! |

I'm sure it's just the luck of the draw as the APK & XPK shells were the same as far as I know... but then I guess a lick of black paint inside could hide a multitude of sins!
Love the natural finish on your XPK by the way, but what is going on with that Floortom badge? I think your FT (and the badge) is upside down |

I had a topaz lacquer XPK (birch/eucalyptus/birch) with the low mass lugs. probably my favourite ever kit that has been in my posession |

I had a Projector kit with drums made in two different years in the early 90s, the later ones just as Genistas were coming in. The later drums were in better round and had much nicer edges. Perhaps Premier upped their game a bit around that time. |
