I was going to let him loose on my kit but wondered if starting him off on a real kit would be the right way to go. He has previous:

...but since then the drums got packed away and I learned guitar. Now he wants to learn properly (!!)

What ear protection would be best - bearing in mind that he probably won't let me put ear-plugs on him. Will drummer ear muffs fit properly? Don't want to damage his hearing...

Or maybe I'll just start him on the Hart kit...??

My kids use 'Peltor Kids' ear defenders. The come in loads of funky colours and are well worth 20 odd quid in my opinion.

No, still have it. Not used it for a while though. I thought about selling it at one point, but couldn't bring myself to. Too nice a kit, and one day I reckoned I'd find a use for it :)

Ey-oop, indeed, I've been doing other stuff (musically) - song-writing, learning folk guitar, all that sort of stuff. I reckon that once I dust the drums back down it'll have made me a better drummer, even though I reckon my chops will have rusted away during the break.

I'd love to be back in a band, but at the moment I've not really got time. One day, though.... :)

I do mean to get an 18" bass drum - much as I love the Highwood Santos kit (or at least I did last time I saw it, it having been cased up for two years) I think a really simply 18" bass drum and the Brookie snare drum would make for a lovely 'song-server' kit.... I feel a post coming on.......

I thought you'd sold the Highwood?

Hey John
Long time no see!
I would start him on the leccy kit with headphones, that way he has to wear them to hear what he's doing and you can control the volume yourself.
