So, the Scottish health minister announced yesterday that Scotland is looking at a proposed minimum of 50p per unit of alcohol for sale in shops & supermarkets etc.
Discussions in Westminster at looking at a proposed 40p per unit minimum in England and Wales.
I bet shopkeepers in Carlisle and Berwick are looking forward to that one!!!!!!!!

Given that people addicted to crack and other harder drugs can manage to get their hands on what can about to many several hundred pounds a week worth of drugs I can't see this stopping any alcoholic. All I can see is alcoholics become more criminal when begging alone doesn't cover the bills.
However I don't think this move is to stop what you'd class as hardcore alcoholics, I think it's more antisocial and underage drinking, but I can't see it working. It's a large scale cultural and social shift they need to bring about, and frankly that's not going to change with a few extra pence per unit.

Not sure if it will affect pubs, I hope not as too many are closing as it is.
The sooner these self driving cars come out the better, as we can all visit pubs more, get hammered and let the car take us home |

I drink.alot. it wont stop me drinking. i will provably have people round more than going out though. so it isnt helping the local pubs and taxis. unless i didnt get it... |

I'm still a binge drinking embarrassment and proud of it, and no the price changes won't alter a thing, except the governments coffers |

Can't see how it is removing people's freedoms... you are still able to buy it - they have just made it more expensive - banning would have made it more along that line.
Have you tried drinking that super strength stuff ?  Methinks they are doing us a favour !!
My car tax and the fuel it drinks has been hiked up - but I don't feel I am being nannied..... just more skint |

It looks to be aimed at hiking up the price of the large very cheap bottles of stupid strength cider / beer - just the fuel of the get pi55ed quick binge drinkers........ if it deters them from that and pushes them towards drinking more of the lower alcoholic stuff in greater quantities, therefore a slower burn and therefore possibly taking longer then that could be a good thing. |

And who the **** is going to spend £13 on a bottle of $hite quality vodka?
In essence it's just another price hike which will benefit the supermarkets.

It's a complete nonsense, though, that policy. People who want to get pished and violent will still get pished and violent. Alcoholics will still be alcoholics - the price of the alcohol has nothing to do with the addiction. Putting the price up a bit won't make the slightest difference. But someone will get richer out of it.

Most beer, wines and spirits will not be touched; but on say a bottle of Tesco own label vodka (26 units), minimum price in Scotland will be £13, but in England it will be £10.40!!!
Time to look into 'The Borders off licence' chain.
