In your opinion where is acceptable to just whip out the pad
I took my son to the soft play which means a hour of me jumping all over the place, just trying out the equipment to make sure it's safe ;)
The other hour is me sat around so I thought take the pad with me, get some practice, apparently not as a member of staff said that it was annoying other customers lol
Where is actually acceptable, I'm public ? In private ?

buy an old style mouse mat (the foam ones).. then place it on top of your practice pad and use a couple of rubber bands to hold it down....
it will then probably be quiet enough not to annoy but bouncy enough to practice... not quiet enough? add a second mouse matt...

The reason they asked you to stop is that they're all jealous.
All of them at some point had taken on a musical instrument with dreams of playing well and being able to use this talent for their personal enjoyment, and possible financial gain.
Eventually these lofty ambitions were dashed to pieces by life, in many forms - usually lack of ability, parents who didn't understand, or simply no longer having time. They engage in meaningless chatter about football teams and shows on the telly in order to try and forget about their more meaningful childhood endeavours. They see you practicing, and the memories come painfully flooding back.
The irritation that they express is not directed personally at you, but more towards the fact that they did not have the persistence and/or the drive that you have, to take their instrument to the level that they once aspired to. The real hate is directed at themselves, so don't be discouraged by the "haters".
The mere fact that someone is practicing an instrument - any instrument - in a public place is inspiring and uplifting to the general populace. They may appear annoyed on the surface, but deep inside, the creative gift is stirring and yearning for a new outlet. Your simple pad-bashing is setting people free!
When frustrated glares are directed your way when you are practicing in public, a simple encouraging smile and a, "You could do this too!" will immediately defuse the situation. |

That would be totally indecent.

If people around you cannot hear what you are doing then do whatever you want. Loud radios/music players in a park or on a beach can be a pain, and much noisier than most practice pads would be.
I have two solid electric ukuleles which are inaudible from about 4 feet away and I practice on them wherever I go, even trains, and no-one cares and very few even notice. |

It was a evans 9" real feel pad but to be fair to myself i had removed the snare part of the pad and they are fairly quiet especially in a place with music on, kids screaming and adults making useless conversation
As i was there with my son i had his bag with a change of clothes and nappies etc in so i just put the pad into the bag, since he was born i have a tendency to carry a man bag everywhere "just in case" lol all the fathers will know what i mean |

^^ very much so. The only thing I dont get is why you used a practice pad? Was it a small one like strapped to your knee? Or a stand n all? I would have probably got some sticks and used my leg (I do at home and before gigs too). But I don't see the problem unless it was really noisy. I think it shows a fair bit of dedication if you're practicing this much. my 2p |

i saw a young lad (15ish) at Birmingham New Street station sitting on a bench waiting for his train ferociously air drumming - and i mean really going for it. I can only assume it was metal, as there was double bass pedalling, big fills etc. Being a fellow drummer it was interesting cos i could "hear" what he was playing by watching.
If i was a non-drumming member of the public i would have thought "what the hell is he doing??!!" |

I just got in two hours of hand/leg practice at a GB volleyball match in Crawley. To build "atmosphere" they give you sheets of cardboard concertina'd into a fan, which you then hold at one end and whack against anything close by. It gives a very satisfying rrrrrrrrap. They also thoughtfully play snips of beatful songs to rrrrrrrrap along to, so I just gave my weak left snare hand a thorough workout. Gonna try it with two hands next time. |

If you're practicing technique, doubles etc... kinda need a stick and a bit o rebound. Though leg practice wont hurt! |

I took the pad to actually kill the time whilst sat there for a hour doing nothing, i couldn't really give a monkeys if anyone thinks im a T*** or a rock star, i know im not and thats why im practising or i wouldn't need to have the pad out but i did stop when asked to as im in someone elses building and they have the right to ask but i fear i would have ended up in a heated debate if a customer had asked.

I practice with the pad anywhere and everywhere if I have time to kill (as some of you may have seen from my picture on the beach in Crete!). Go for it B/B.
I'm not doing it to attract attention or look like a rockstar and i couldnt care less if you think I look like a twunt. I'm doing it to make me a better player because drumming is my life and I never want to miss an opportunity to grow. If you're looking at me thinking what a dooche then it's you with the problem, not me.
I of course keep it respectable and make sure it's out of general earshot if people are sat around near me, and if someone did complain about noise I'd stop no questions, but I'll always give it a go! |

I hate it when you go to a drum shop and the bloke behind the counter spins sticks in your face and starts tapping on the pad.
I swear one day i will take the sticks off the dick and play all over his f=cking head its really get to me.
Then as soon as you walk away they stop 
Most are sh-t and need a drum lesson.
People who are not drummers hate people tapping you most of been told off in the past |

I think that in this day and age the stigma of getting your pads out in public should be well and truly resigned to the past.
I would consider it to be a perfectly natural function and it is about time that the general public accepted the practise as part of every day life !
