Posted - 25/05/2012 : 18:22:17 Im with you Captain, I think they are lovely. I like gold hardware. I'd love to hear what they sound like. They might be a bugger to clean though. I had half a dozen lessons with Alan White in the eighties. He taught me about ergonomics, posture and economy of movement. He's a fantastic drummer. |

Posted - 25/05/2012 : 17:41:07 Stunning, absolutely stunning! Not everyones cuppa tea I guess. I always fancied a clear perspex kit with gold hardware but this beats all. |

Posted - 25/05/2012 : 11:02:46 You're absolutely right about the logic, dogface, the rim of the wine glass is free to vibrate, the rim of a drum shell is held very still in all three dimensions by the collar of the drum head. Even with no tension on it the collar is amazingly rigid for very thin material, but put any tension on and it grips very tightly indeed! However the tuning mechanism does leave the rest of the shell largely free to vibrate, but not in the same manner as a wine glass. I would still love to hear them, reckon they will be pretty loud and punchy, perhaps fairly close to stainless steel or Perspex shells, but regardless of the sound I like 'em even if no-one else does! To be honest though, I would not like to gig one without a good roady and flight cases. |

Posted - 25/05/2012 : 10:34:55 Running your finger round the edge of a wine glass produces a musical sound, therefore glass must be a good material to make drums from. This logic is very dubious. |

I would be interested in comparing them with my Spacer Kits |

Posted - 24/05/2012 : 15:43:28 I think they look simialr to Armillary Spheres, Orreries and other old astronomical instruments which I LOVE. The fact that you can play them adds to their appeal. I can imagine Constellations engraved on the shells.
On one of the upper floors in the Science Museum in this That London they have a large glass fronted cabinet of 17th / 18th century scientific equipment which are a beautiful combination of Art, Craftsmanship and Science, lots of brass and glass, and these drums have exactly that same appeal to me.
Am I really the only one who likes them? Ya great bunch of philistines, grrrr, mumble, grumble.....(wanders off into the distance muttering in a sulk...... !

Posted - 24/05/2012 : 13:27:22 They've been on the go for quite a while, those Orlich glass drums. I'm not MADLY keen on the look, TBH, but it's nice to see something unusual.

Posted - 24/05/2012 : 13:09:16 To me the brass frame makes the drum look too complicated and distracts from the beauty of the glass. |
