Thought some of you maybe interested to hear the results of a Library music project I played drums on...
The idea was to try and get as close to the style and sound of Motown and Stax music as possible...
Great producer Steve Levine recorded us "live in the room" at Toerag Studios (All vintage 60's equipment)...Vocals and horns etc were added afterwards...
PS None of the rhythm section wore headphones for these sessions!! NO CLICK TRACKS!!
I played the house 60's Roundbadge Gretsch, my Ludwig 400 and mixture of Toerag's 60's A's and K's....

^ There was an excellent episode on Live From Daryl's House with Sharon Jones from the Dap Kings, great singer! I think it showed a bit of background on the Dap Kings too from what I remember. People were thinking the Dap Kings was an original band from the 60s that had somehow been forgotten about and their recordings were reappearing and mega collectable

Hi fellas, I'm afraid this project is very unlikely to be released as an album as it was primarily recorded as a bank of library music (i.e for use on TV/Ads/Films etc.)
Really glad you like it though.

Great really enjoyed listening to that, great playing Pat nice feel, Im really into the stax soul sound at the mo, also been giving Sharron Jones and the dap kings a big whirl, all the abums are great, but will defo get the 60s soul Album when it comes out. thanks |

Great stuff, Pat. While I'm all for the portability of modern recording set-ups (I use one too), it's so good to see Toerag and Daptone flying the flag for the pure analogue. And while there is that silly left and right flank of pure analogue against pure digital brigade, I really like the middle ground where ther old guard have shifted to new technologies and the new guard are experimenting with the magic combination of a drum kit, a great acoustic space and a two condenser microphones.

Maida Vale studios used to run Studer A800 24 track machines (2 inch tape) running at 30ips. Some of the machine rooms had 3 A800 powered up!

Crafty's post on remembering Maida Vale bought back my memories of playing there too, also the BBC Radio 2 Country Club studio (i cant rememeber where it was) which we did a few times, i thought the tape was more like 2", i remember being really impressed with the way the engineer just wound the reels back and forward and found the right place to cut the tape, good old days before digital eh,, |

maybe It's my ears (speakers) or just that the concept of stax is different to the reality of sound but it still sounds almost a bit modern somehow? almost too well recorded?

Great pics! You can push tape pretty hard. I have wonderful memories of sessions before DAWs where the tape machine room added a bit more magic to the recording process. The machine rooms at Maida Vale were a thing to behold. I'm sure you rmember them.

Hi Ed, I'm afraid I'm not very techy but I know that there's an EMI Redd desk (one of only 3 in the world) at Toerag which really helps with the crunchiness...We also recorded on to 1 inch tape. I have no idea about what additional compressors and eq's were used unfortunately...
I've included a link to a few snaps I took...maybe you can work out what some of the gear is from them? Toerag is a total timewarp and is just as much a museum as a studio. It's a wonderful place.

Pat. I'd love to see the processors used on your drums for the Motown stuff. Any ideas on the compressors and eqs? Even the overdrive is spot on.

Wow!! truly beautiful, unbelievable, i'm bouncing around on my seat to this. Real feel good Motown Northern soul, my memories of the 'Red Hut disco' when i was 16 are flooding back.
