Posted - 31/05/2012 : 23:58:27 We had been booked to play the Manhattan 34 bar in central Leicester
This was to be our second gig there. On arrival they informed us that a noise limiter had been installed by the council, the level was 85db
We soon found out that even with the Jobeky kit we could not manage more than two bars into a number without it tripping!
the council had set the levels with an ipod!!!! and refused to answer the phone.
80 metres up the road is another pub, thge 'Ale Wagon' We asked if they wanted a band for free, they said yes, so we asked our not considerable audience to help and they carried our set up over, where e had a great gig
And of course they want us back |

True.
We tried, but even using brushes on the Jobeky with the pa turned off tripped the limiter!!
Whereas last night we were playing a party in a marquee, in the middle of dense housing and didn't get one complaint

It turns out, that the person that lives above the bar, has monitoring equipment in his premises, fed by the limiter, which also detects any form of tampering. he is also Our elected mayor
We won't be playing there again, shame as their Mahou is a tasty pint. |

Posted - 05/06/2012 : 16:30:09 So far, every place I've played with a noise limiter has turned it off or deactivated it somehow.

Posted - 03/06/2012 : 11:34:30 I have played a gig in South London where they have a limiter. Very nice red light that flashes on all the time. The landlord always tells us to plug in a specific place and avoid its nonsense. Its live music FFS. I love watching it to see the longest period it can stay red for.... |

Posted - 01/06/2012 : 13:18:30 Yeah that was indeed Old Nick's - really nice place I thought. I don't think we were really what they wanted - they asked us to do 'a few covers', so we dropped 5 covers into two sets of originals. The crowd seemed to enjoy it though and we got paid OK, but from what they said they probably would have liked more covers than originals.
They have a good way of paying you there - they give you a base rate, and at the end of each set they pass a beer jug round the crowd for a collection - you get the collection at the end. I think everyone wins here, the pub don't lose out if the place is empty, the crowd don't pay a door fee and don't have to pay if they think you're rubbish, and if you're good you get decent $$.
Good luck with the gig, I'm sure you'll enjoy it! Say hi to them from us, lovely people :) |

Posted - 01/06/2012 : 09:15:25 When I was at Leeds College of Music (some 12 years ago) they installed limiters INTO THE PRACTICE ROOMS. Every time I went into practice kit, one decent wallop of the bass drum would set it off and kill the power in the room. No number of complaints got them to de-limit them. |

Posted - 01/06/2012 : 09:07:50 Played a place in Horncastle at the weekend where they didn't have a limiter but they had a hand-held noise level meter, and we were 'politely asked' not to exceed 100db as they had previously had complaints and had an arrangement with neighbours. We struggled with 100db but just about managed to keep them happy. I normally hit 'em pretty hard and found it difficult to tickle the snare without getting carried away.
No self control me. |

Posted - 01/06/2012 : 01:52:51 Am I naiive in believing that everyone bypassed these things!? Any venue 'ere ooop north that has one of these things installed seems to have some manner of "disabling" it or bypassing it. I'm never anywhere near at the time guv'nor - I don't have anything to do with anything that needs plugging it. It's witchcraft that there electrickery. I suspect things aren't done the way they should be around these parts. Why they even *gasp* still smoke indoors in some of the very naughtiest places. It's anarchy. |

Posted - 01/06/2012 : 00:08:03 85dB is nothing!! There's nothing worse than playing with a noise limiter. You spend the entire time tranfixed on not staying in the red, ignoring the audience |
