I think a lot of people gloss over Zildjian A's... they arn't 'extreme' in any way, not jazz grails, not heavy behemoth rock crashes.

however we have just been having a drum 'shed' with a selection of music. jazz to rock, to funk to R&B and even that really modern metal stuff. new beats, sweet ride, 16+18" fast crashes... job done. never sounded wrong.

basically, they are vanilla. and vanilla is fantastic. a really good vanila beats an ok but limeted appeal of a (K) dark chocolate, or zesty bright lemon... if you cant make vanilla, you can't make ice cream.

in the same way, if you can't make A's sound good, you can't make music. A's just work...

Yeah I love the A's! I have the 13" New Beats which are just fantastic and the 21" Armand Ride which is absolutely splendid indeed.

Wish I could agree but cymbals, especially cast cymbals, are too individual to be grouped so loosely, I've heard some truly awesome A's, but also some that were almost unplayable along with lots so dull as to be just too boring to want to hit.
My favourite ever splash is an A that probably shouldn't have got through quality control, mis cut so it has a flat lip almost 2 mm wide, sounds perfect but also have had in my time, quick beats that sounded fine closed but were grating even a little open and an 18" A crash with a sustain so long it was barely controllable.
I'll now just go by ear regardless of make or model till I get the sound I want.
