It seems my udu playing in small acoustic settings is now moving onto a larger scale. The udu that I'm using has a very small built in microphone hole but my question is, "What microphones (internal) have you used? Any recommendations?"

Something I have always fancied getting and playing but have not yet got around to! Sorry, No real idea, but some modern tie clip mics are very high quality, check out Maplins and Thomann

I use Beyer Opus 87 mics on my Djembes and Darbukas....but lord knows how I'd mount one of those to the udu :-)

I first encountered Udus at PASIC '94 at Atlanta, Georgia when I was exhibiting my timpani. They had acoustic ones and others with in-built mics, they seemed to be tie clip mics, about the size of a Fruit Pastille secured inside with what looked like Silicone Sealant or a splodge of Hot Melt Glue Gun glue. Bostik Clear glue might also be great for this. I thought then that it made sense to get one with in-built mic because then you would always have the option, but without it things would be tricky because the holes were fairly small. It might be done by using some pliers with long curved noses; some craft and jewelry suppliers sell these or rswww.com

I know someone with a long curved nose who is crafty.. I think I'll enlist their help. Lavalier all the way it seems. :-)

Quite a lot of money, but great specs, that looks like right thing for you! I am pretty handy at figuring out how to instal and adapt things, make brackets etc if you need any help.

Hmmm, looking at the dimensions, I don't see how this mic will fit into the microphone hole on the neck.... further investigation required! (again)

I have several udu's and have been pondering the problem of live mic'ing as well. At the moment I'm using two SM57's as they have reasonable feedback tolerance, but it's a combersome way to do it. Using an internal microphone has to be the way to go, but not easy!

What ever mic you use use is not going to fit thru the microphone hole on the Meinl udu, so one thought is to wire what ever microphone you install to a micro connector which fits in the whole; there are several I've come across, switchcraft make some mini connectors that would fit. This would mean making up special cables, but it would also mean that you wouldn't have trailing wires coming out of the mic hole when it isn't plugged in.

Haven't got the money at the moment to experiment, but one candidate I came across is the AKG C411. A contact vibration condenser mic used for stringed instruments but the specs suggests it might do the job, and it's not expensive. Also, for studio mic'ing I've been using the Karma K-micro, check out the SOS review. A cheap condenser mic that works well on drums and percussion but way too sensitive for live work.

Good Luck!

PS. Have you seen the you tube vid of the percussionist Jamey Haddad demonstrating the LP Hadgini dual chambered udu? Externally mic'ed using SM57's and internally mic'ed using DPA's. He doesn't say which DPA mics he's using but it's probably one of their miniture condensers; the 4060 is an omni mic with an electret capsule that is only 5.5mm across! This mic is small enough to fit in the Meinl mic hole.

Apparently it sounds great, but at £250 each they should do. Obviously Jamey is doing well for himself as he has fitted two of them!

I have success!!!! I used a Rode Lavalier Mic with some of that there audio putty! Works a treat. The foam around the capsule fills out the microphone hole and the audio putty just holds things in place.

I'll post some video/audio when I get a moment

£149, plus I had to get a gender changer to XLR which was about £20. I already had the putty :-)
