...why some drummers use 16" or 18" crashes as hi hats??
Possibly it's the era I'm influenced by, I don't know. To put this in perspective, I use a set of 14" New Beats and a set of 13" K/Z. To me, hi-hats should have some degree of cut and definition... shouldn't they? If you start using larger, thinner cymbals, all of that goes out the window and you're just left with sonic mush that the sound guy can't work with. If you're after volume, surely you just go with a heavier set of hats...? Or maybe it's just to be different. I honestly have no idea.
I'm not trying to stir the pot or anything, but I drum teched for a festival over Easter, and met at least two drummers were employing this setup, and I know of one more. Maybe someone can enlighten me...?

| If I'm playing loud, sonic-wall instrumental stuff, I'm actually quite partial to using two 18" crashes as hats. It just adds an extra level of wash and a much darker sound overall. For me it's not a volume thing. |

| Fair enough, I suppose... I hate to say it, but it's probably me. |

I see nothing wrong with this hihat sound...
Personal taste - to me the hi-hats don't sound very good at all, which is a shame because his playing of them is mind blowing. Some great stick control there. |

They fit in well with the Genre he's playing, but would sound totaly out of place in an other. |

Inspired by this thread, I thought I'd try my a couple of 18" crashes as hihats. My 18" stage crash as a top cymbal with my O-Zone as bottom.
Sounded shyte.
