hi there im about to invest in a drum mic set . i have standard four piece kit with a few sabians and want to start home recording for demo purposes etc . Im looking to spend around £200 for a set , can anyone give me makes and models ??? many thanks x |

| The Audix F series are the best cheap drum mic set I've heard. I think they are a bit more than your budget new so maybe try and pick some up second hand? |

| Red 5 seem to be quite popular too, not used them but people here say they work well. Are you looking or a set for the whole kit or just one or two? |

| ideally a whole set , i know my budget isnt high but its just for a bit of recording here and there , or get one kick mic and one overhead and see how that works ?? its purely for demo purposes so it doesnt have to be an amazing sound xx thanks again |

Red 5 mics are fantastic for the money. Much better than the equivalent Samson and Warfedale packs.
We've got a set that we're slowly updating with more professional mics when we have the money. At the moment we're using a 57 on snare and Rode NT5s as OHs. The Red 5 on bass drum and toms don't sound like weak links by any stretch of the imagination.
They'll do for your demos and much more. Good live mics too. |

| ooh yeah, forgot about the red 5 mics. I picked up a kick drum mic and it's amazing for the money. If cash is really tight, kick, snare and one or two overheads is a great start. |

| Have a look at the recorderman technique (Search google, youtube, etc) for micing drums. You use two overheads and a bass drum mic. If you have the time to spend with positioning the mics you can get some truly amazing sounds from that setup. £200 would also buy you three very decent mics - rather than say 5 or 6 medioacre ones. I have used it a lot and it can sound really good. Just a thought of course. I do have some Red 5 mics too and I would say they are very very good for the money. Thoman also makes their own T-Bone mics which are also excellent for the cash. |

| Coincidently, I just mentioned the recorderman technique on the DIY album thread. I'd agree that fewer mics of better quality is a good idea. The only problem with more distant micing is that the room plays a bigger role. That's good if it's a good sounding room, but bad if it's not. |

| +1 on the quality over quantity, as soon as you get close in on mic's you ideally need gates, possibly compression, more expense, more hassle and not necessarily better quality, two overheads and a kick mic at good level will be so much better and faster to work with. |
