I went to see Sweedish metal kings Meshuggah at Rock City in Nottingham last night. It was a stupendous show; 1h 45m of perfectly-performed technical metal. The band were truly 'on form' and clearly loved what they were doing. The crowd were also excellent, providing suitable pit action when it was required and joining in Jens Kidman's robotic head-nod in a union that could only be described as tribal!

Tomas Haake. This man is - really, truly - a fantastic musician. He showed his kit absolutely no mercy throughout the set and yet didn't seem to be pulverising it as you would expect from a man of his stature (and with the sticks he was using!). Seeing (I was close enough, thank goodness) and hearing him execute tracks like 'Bleed', 'Pravus', and 'Future Breed Machine' note-for-note was really something to behold; the hairta patterns of 'Bleed' are, quite frankly, terrifying. He did look like he was working up a sweat playing that particular track, mind you; I read in an interview that he spent six months preparing for the recording!

I was paying particular attention to what he was doing - naturally - and saw a couple of little slip-ups acknowledged by a smile from his drum tech. Despite dropping a note at the end of a fill, he never, not once, dropped the beat. At least it proves that he is only human...

If you get a chance to see them, do so. Please.

(Animals As Leaders were also fantastic; mind-blowing. Their new drummer - third drummer! - is a monster; straight out of Berklee and full of chops. He was groovy but in a very technical manner. Perfect for AAL.

He was using a Tama Bubinga Omni-Tune kit which I'd never seen on a stage before. It sounded really nice; a great open, natural sound to it.)

I caught about 15 minutes of their set. Shaun was great, although I didn't really get on with the music. It was a bit like the stuff I was playing ten years ago at college...!

From the same town in Sweden as Refused... I love Umea!

Great band - glad it was a stonker - No sign of Haake's back problems then? Good news! I remember seeing them at somesuch festival somewhere, sometime and they had a dep (A DEP!!!!) who would come on and nail Thomas' parts when he needed a break... unreal.

'Bleed' is frightening. I mean, frightening. Really.

I didn't know he had a back issue? Dang. I hope that doesn't flare up; it certainly didn't look like he was suffering. I did wonder why he'd stripped his kit right back to the basics, though... He's rocking a one-up/two-down setup now. Fewer cymbals, too.

They played 'New Millenium Cyanide Christ' too, which I've never seen them do live. That was almost on par with 'Bleed' in the scary-stakes!

I might transcribe 'Bleed' later... just for S and Gs! That kick line would make an awesome snare solo.

As I recall Haake has been suffering from fairly severe back/shoulder problems for quite a long time time. Which was the primary driver behind his current kit setup. His old setup was 10/12/13/16/18 on the toms but I think now he uses 14/12/16. Mainly because he is trying to reduce the amount of upper-body rotation while playing.

Kind of wish/don't wish I'd seen them this year. Much as I love their older stuff I really can't be doing with watching them live. Just not enough songs the crowd can genuinely interact with, and the band themselves arn't particularly interesting to watch on stage. And to be honest I'm getting seriously burnt out on technical metal. So little real emotion behind any of it. It's almost as bad as the shred guitar rubbish that refuses to die to this day. :-(

Glad to hear it sounds like Tomas is getting over his back problem (I am sure lots of us round here can sympathise) He is just insanely good. The groove on bleed is a bit like a Gavin Harrison bass drum fill but for the duration of the 'kin song
