The Magician had one of those. Looked fabulous, sounded like a bin lid. Purely subjective view, but I do like his other UFiP pies so I don't think it's brand antagonism on my part. For the purposes of calibration, I also think Rudes sound like bin lids (a heretical view in some circles), so your mileage may well vary.

| I think UFIP might have originally introduced the Tiger as a part of the Experience series and, as I understand it, they were far higher quality than the Tiger series proper when it came out. I think the newer production ones are stamped rather than cast. |

The original Tiger series were inspired by the late Roberto Spizzichino in the mid 80s and as far as i can remember they were Rotocast B20 cymbals. I have heard a few of the original series and they have a unique sound to them which didn't really do it for me.
The present series are B8 cymbals and are supposedly made from the same blanks as Paiste Rudes. Personally i don't like them compared to Rotocast B20 cymbals from Ufip's other lines. The Hats and Rides are passable whilst the Crashes and Splash are poor. The Chinas are loud and in your face but lack a touch of quality.
Aimed at the younger player due to price and visual appearance and cheaper than the Rudes which although also B8 sheet cymbals in some camps they seem to be cast.......at a very long push.
My local shop a Ufip dealer have a Rude Crash next to the Tigers to let people compare the two brands and for what its worth they sound very similar despite the Rude being more expensive however not everyone will like the Tigers appearance.
There are a few Tiger style models in the Experience series but these are top line and thus a bit more expensive.
They do crop up on the secondhand market now and then and go for reasonable prices. |
Resonators and Ufips....just beautiful. www.vintageolympic.co.uk
Rotocasting is definitely the pinnacle of cymbal manufacture!
