Last night The Cohen Brothers had the honour of supporting Matt Schofield, UK blues supremo and all round good egg. Watching his band from close quarters was a humbling experience and a masterclass in working an audience. They were supportive and generous to us as a support act, shifting their gear around to accomodate us without complaint. Does anyone else have good experiences of support slots? Or (more tantalisingly) bad experiences?

Nothing as major as Matt Schofield, but have supported a couple of headline acts recently who have been unfailingly helpful. One had the most ridiculously tall German fellow on drums, playing for Eugene Bridges, who hovered over the kit as I had a rattle and offered to move it all around for me (I didn't move anything). Then Sam Kelly offered to let me use his rather nice Carrera kit without a flicker of hesitation. Neither expected breakables to be swapped in, and both were excellent experiences. And both excellent bands. Sam Kelly's Station House in particular were simply stellar, and made me only too keenly aware of my own mediocrity.

Saw Eugene at Cropredy last year - brilliant. Sam Kelly is an absolute gent! He allowed me to use his previous DW kit (almost insisted)! when we supported Geoff Acheson and we talked drums for hours. Was hoping he might be doing the Cropredy Fringe this year with Station House or one of his many other bands, but unfortunately not. And what a great drummer.Guys like him make it all worth while.

You have hit the nail on the head!

A lot of bands can play but have no stage craft/charisma.

Kit sharing is about mutual respect.

Shut it and whack the poxy things!

Many years ago my band played a support slot for Les Payne who at the time had Sam Kelly on drums. I hadn't been playing long and was very nervous but Sam was an absolute gent, very supportive and encouraging but still able to give constructive advice without making me feel inadequate. And then I had the pleasure of watching him play at very close quarters.

A true Rock'n'Roll legend. I saw him in Marlow Bottom 20+ years ago - is he still going?

I used Pete biggin's kit a few years back. We were showcasing this new artist and he was in the clubs house band for the night. The whole band let us use their equipment and were really cool about it. They checked out our set as well. Seemed like nice guys, all very very good players.

1st time I Played and fell in love with the Sabian ozone evo crash!

Two years ago my band supported Eric Sardinas in Glasgow. Bernard Pershey from the US of A was on drums. We didn't share a kit as I had mine with me anyway, but he was an absolute gent (as were the whole band). Gave me some advice, listened to us, talked drums with me. And his playing was epic. Tasteful, grooving, rock solid, with chops to die for in just the right places.

Tuppster, yeah Les is still on the go. he's running a home studio in High Wycombe, we're looking to do a recording with our covers band there soon. Spent a couple of hours with him the other week to see what he could do, he's an absolute gent and not short of a few stories!

Tuppster, yes we played a few times at the Pegasus club in Marlow Bottom, supported Les a couple of times and also "headlined" a few times with band called Between The Lines playing country rock covers.
