I've just got one of these Tune-bot devices and tried it out this afternoon...it's bloody fantastic!!!!

http://www.tune-bot.com/

I appreciate it won't be for everyone but for as long as I've been playing I've just been terrible at tuning. I honestly think I have some kind of issue differentiating between pitches because I really struggle to hear which way a lug needs to go or whether two lugs are actually at the same pitch.

For the first time in AGES my toms sound great! I just went with the 'suggested' settings at first and all of a sudden the drum just 'worked' as it became properly in tune!!

I'd be happy to just use the tune-bot and go with my eyes (followed by my ears of course) to tune my drums from now on but hopefully I may well find that the affirmation I get from the tune-bot that a lug it at a certain pitch will help me train my ears.

I just had to pass this on as I'm sure there are plenty of people in the same position as me who find tuning a black art and, like me have tried all the other available technology and old wives tales with little success

P.S - I know it sounds like an advert but I honestly don't work for or sell the Tune-bot...I just like it!

Ordered mine a couple of weeks ago from Absolute, waiting for delivery, looking forward to using it, pretty happy tuning by ear, but when it comes to actually 'tuning' toms to a song for instance, no idea, will be interesting.

I hadn't heard of it until I read this post. I am very curious about it as tuning drums is one of my areas of interest. I am ok with tuning by ear BTW, but watching the demo video and reading the tuning guide on their website seems to take it to a whole new level... I've ordered one tonight. I will have to see how good it is, when it arrives as they are currently out of stock.

Could you achieve a similar result with an acoustic guitar chromatic tuner?

Yup! I have a cheap Korg CA-30 which I use for tuning all my timpani, drums, ukuleles, guitars, banjo, spinet and bass. Works fine, and I tune all the toms on my BIG kit chromatically on top and bottom heads, and just £20. The Tune-Bot seems more sophisticated and versatile and possibly a bit faster too, so I might get one sometime.
