Hello,
I am hoping someone here can help me. I build stringed instruments and am attempting to build a Japanese Shamisen which has a skin on the front and back.
Where can I get material suitable for a drum skin? I am after a synthetic material in white or maybe calf skin. I don't really fancying using the cat or dog skin that's used on traditional instruments!

Most craft shops will sell you square sheets of Mylar. Pretty cheap but not same quality or strength as drum head material but as you aren't hitting it, should be fine.
Alternatively, buy a big bass drum head and chop it up for what you need. |

Welcome to the forum! Mylar is the basic name for a material which is the most popular drumhead material, but the grades sold as drum heads are vastly tougher than domestic grades! Do not even consider using standard mylar!
As said, buy a big plastic bass drum head of your choice, big enough to allow plenty of room for nailing, or go for vellum. I have vellum heads on my new kit and they were made by Eddie Ryan over in that Essex, they are lovely, and frankly FAR better for a Shamisen (or any other ethnic/traditional instrument) than any plastic head.

You can buy goatskin "drumheads" on ebay in the percussion/heads section. They're actually just round, flat goatskins. I've used them, they're ok.
Alternatively, Stentor sell them
