I'm sure this has been done to death but....
Last night at rehearsal I split my snare head. I have never split a head before so it was a bit of a shock. I couldn't quite believe it had happened... I managed to butcher a tom of equal diameter to continue with the rest of our terrible rendition of Back in Black, however now I am left with the need to get myself a new head, as the tom head just won't do as a long term solution.
Tama Superstar 13" snare is the drum, I'm after a bright, open tone and decent durability (I hit the thing pretty hard). I play loud, heavy rock music.
Thoughts? |

| I prefer Remo's and Aquarian to Evans personally. The CS Black Dot Coated is quite nice, and the Hi-Velocity is good too. For a brighter tone from Remo I'd recommend a non-coated head, but it's worth checking a few out. |

The Evans reverse power lar de da seems to last longer than the remo.

Hi Sharklaar,
Totally unscientific & I won't be using this information to inform what I buy in future, but my Evans Power Centre Reverse Coated self destructed halfway through my second set last Friday. After 2 gigs worth of use.
That being said I'll be happy to get another or an Evans G1 or Remo Ambassador.
On another note I bought an Evans HD head (the thick one with holes around the edges) for a dry sound & I'm finding it perhaps TOO dry in use. It's made me think that a decent single ply coated head (despite the buzzes & pings you hear when the band aren't playing) may be as good as anything in "real life" when those little pops & whizzes aren't heard anyway.
Off out now to hope that I don't fold a second head in as many gigs :-0

| Emperor X, HD, either will give you what you want. The CS or PCRD will be a bit fatter. I've used all four, I don't exactly tickle my snare, and to be honest I found they all lasted about the same. Sound wise, the drum itself will influence the sound more than the difference between manufacturer. For the record I switched back to Remo after 10 years with Evans as I found they suited my new kit more. |

The drum is quite a resonant drum, hence looking for a dry sounding head to find a bit of a medium....
Well I need the head in a hurry for a gig tomorrow night and there's only one shop I can get to tomorrow so I'm limited to what they've got in stock, but having taken all things into consideration I'll be after a reverse power blah or possibly the Genera HD if they've got them.

Hi Sharklaar,
Personally having used a Genera HD I won't buy another. It's all diwn to taste but I'd describe the effect as all crack and nothing else.

I tried the hd dry and found it was great in a studio or sound dead room but was really bad at projection. Changed to Remo and loved the sound, bright with good crack but.....
Just bought a Evans reverse dot for the chad
Smith and will try it thus Sunday with the band
Is there a vast difference in the power centre reverse and the ec reverse |

In fact given that I've just found out that we're having to use only a vocal PA tonight I've just whipped the Genera HD off and re fitted a partly used Remo UT Black Panther Logo'd head. Hardly a high quality skin but as lively as you like. And my goodness that HD head was THICK!
