These were advertised on our local on-line auction, TradeMe, as Olympics. But even to my untrained eye they looked suspiciously like Premiers. I was right and wrong...maybe. The snare (14X5 and a half) has no badge and could be anything. It's a six-lugger so unlikely to be a Premier. The bass (21halfX11 three quarters outside measurement) has an Olympic badge (pictured). The three toms (16X18, 14X8 and 12X8) all have Premier badges. I'm really pleased with these drums. I've bought them as a long-term project....something to play around with in my dottage. The bearing edges are excellent, the chrome a bit pitted, the stands rubbish, the bass drum has no legs...just something that looks like it came from a butcher's shop that clamps on to the front rim. I'm going to trawl through Tam's site etc to try and date these and work out what model they are but any comments, facts, thoughts etc would be most welcome. By the way the foot pedal is something I picked up when I bought some Premier drums for Dug (subsequently going to Steve in Tasmania). Anybody able to say what it is? Also....a question out of absolute ignorance....do these drums have die-cast rims? cheers

That's quite an old set! No idea about the pedal although it looks vaguely familiar. The snare has pressed steel hoops, the rest are die cast Prem ones. Nice project which should provide pleasing results.

They look like 50s drums Peter. The snare is an Oly too. The Oly tom would have had pressed hoops and, as Marcus says, the Premier toms would have all had cast "beer barrel" hoops. I suspect that the Oly tom would have been mounted on the rear hoop originally.

I'm pretty sure the pedal is Maxwin.

I've never seen a bass drum spur contraption like that one before. The Premiers from that era had one of those hoop mounted brackets on each side, with one straight spur per bracket. It must have been an attempt to save money on Olympics by making only one bracket! Presumably it fitted on the bottom of the hoop with the bracket underneath the cross bar.

Jeremy, the spur contraption should have two holders on it, not one, it was from the early 50s, I have one on my late 40s kit

I spent some time pulling these drums apart last night and, with your collective indulgence, have come up with a couple more questions.

1. 12" and 14" international size skins I have here fit the toms...but 16" don't. Does this make sense?

2. To me this is a set...in other words the bass drum and three toms all seem the same..but the bass drum has an Olympic badge. Is this a coincidence or did Premier sometimes sell "mix and match" kits?

cheers

Good Evening,

1. The 12 skin is oversized by 1/4" or so. The 14 is correct. The 16 skin is undersized by 1/4" or so. You need PI 12 and 16 skins.

2. Same shells, same wrap. Same factory. The bass is pre 58 probably. Doubt they mixed drums, possibly put together with an eye to economy by the customer.

Never seen one of those snares before, 50s lugs and later throw, pretty rare. Lovely drums...
