"In traditional Glyn Johns method ( Andy Johns brother ) the micing up of the kit would have been sparse but normally a bass drum mic would be the minimum extra requirement of such a set up . But it was felt by all that even this wasn't needed. So there you have it, two mics!"
This puts into context all those questions on the forum about which snare mic to buy or which bass drum mic, or how to mix drum tracks. Just use a stereo pair over the entire kit! |

First time I saw a bass drum miced onstage was from the back, mic placed next to the beater. Oh! All lies. The Big Three's drummer sang with a straight mic stand coming up between the snare and stool. The first bass drum damping I saw was JB chucking his nice leather bomber jacket in there. Kept it safe too.
I still use the back mic'ing as it picks up the snare too. You just have to check to see if the sound's ok. Some places it isn't. Recording. Close mic's (I'm not a big fan) and overheads. Mostly overheads and blend in the close ones to taste usually does. Good mics make bad(ly tuned) kits sound worse. So. Good mics for great kits and middling to syite for the great unwashed. |
Sitting on top of the mountain isn't the most interesting bit of the climb. Sitting at the bottom aint much fun either. |

Great stuff, cheers for the link. Interesting about the 2 mics recording in the stairwell, I tend to keep my recordings simple, usually doing the bulk of it with one or two PZM/Boundary Affect mics, then perhaps an extra on bass or snare.
I played a gig in the Corn Exchange or Guildhall in Rochester about 3 or 4 years ago and the sound man put a mic on each bass drum and 2 overheads. The sound in that big hall was massive, and sounded very much like Levee, even though I was just using one of my compact kits. I did some JB style stuff for sound check, I think Squeak might have put some of it on you tube. Sadly the incredible acoustics for the drum sound check were horrendous when the whole band was playing! |
