Due to the lack of anything suitable on the market, I'm considering making my own kit.

How hard is it? What are the pitfalls? Can shells be procured with bearing edges already cut?

Hi Prog,

It depends how hard you want to make it, but a simple kit with off-the-shelf shells with edges done for you is pretty easy. It's as much as job of assembling as making if you buy the parts pre made.

Shells can be purchased pretty easily these days, Dave Carerra, Highwood etc all make high quality shells, and these can be done with bearing edges too. If you want keller ST drums are great, and they have lots of hardware too.

It depends what finish you want but a simple wrap is pretty fool proof - I use tape as it means you can change your mind, however I've done very basic varnishes that look great and were also very simple.

Main pitfalls are silly little mistakes, normally caused by not measuring twice - or not thinking about logistics/aesthics of the kit (for example lugs that are too close/far from edges or leg spurs that are slightly in the wrong place leading to splayed looking bass drum spurs)....

But to be honest it's really pretty simple. Just make sure you buy sharp drill bits for the drilling I used a brad point drill set and never looked back.

Thanks. I was hoping you'd be along soon.

Yes, assembling is what I'd be doing and I do like a nice wrap so it's definitely worth considering.

Honestly if it's a drill and wrap job as longs as you can a) mark and drill some holes and b) wrap presents you'll be fine.

Take your time and you could be done in a day or really take your time and make a weekend out of it. It might be a good idea to get someone else who can give you a hand and offer second opinions on the small choices (lug placement, spur placement) and also I find wrapping bass drums easier with two.

As MTD says ready cut shells are available, Highwood's and Carrera's are fantastic, and the Starcustom ones also look great in the photos they posted recently, but I have not seen them in the flesh. I reckon they would all supply them snare beds if asked. If you do decide to try it yourself Highwood/Drum Maker sell quite a lot of the necessary parts, which I often buy, and there is also stdrums.de for other stuff. After getting all the stuff it is really a matter of careful measuring, and measuring again: "measure twice, cut/drill once"!

It'd just be bass and two toms so snare beds are not an issue. I guess I'm just nervous about making a balls up.

I'm sure that any of our custom makers who supply shells would be happy to supply them ready wrapped. It would save on buying excess material, extra postage charges and stress.

You could even buy them ready wrapped, all drilling done and with all hardware and heads fitted, then build your kit from that!

Prog, Mr Carrera is putting together the new GET'd range aimed for people who want to do EXACTLY what you are doing.

Have a look here for the news to come http://www.facebook.com/getsnared

You will buy shells with pre cut bearing edges that come with a marking matt, set square, and some basic online guides to show you how to do it and walk you through the process. Custom drums for the masses. Drop him an email at info[at]carreradrums.com

From Carrera now you can chose any material, thickness/ply number, all handmade in the UK. No shells are imported/bought. Caters for every need. Dave will be offering parts as well.

Another idea is a basic birch snare shell is about £40. Try it. You will learn a lot. When you feel you have made all the mistakes, progress to making the whole kit using what you have learnt.

Not that I'm biased or anything...

Stick it to MS 2009 and 2012 - Number

Dave's shells are really really nice...

I may very well order some more soon, but I'm also debating an aluminium kit and need to clear the last two kits I made before I can make anything new...

It might be an idea to mess about with some FEPOS shells, just to get an idea of what it's all about and to make some relatively-consequence-free mistakes. I'm thinking of doing my first snare build after just finishing a jungle kit conversion on a mate's old Hohner LEX. The jungle kit is a little rough round the edges, but I'm proud of it, and it's given me the confidence and knowledge to do something a bit more ambitious.

Occasionally piping up with stupid questions and irrelevant information on the MD forum since 2003.

What hardware are you thinking of using Chris? There's lots of fancy new hardware available but it doesn't come cheap. You could recycle something solid (probably from old Prems with damaged shells, predictably). That way you'd be more eco-friendly, give a respectful nod to Wigston's finest and have more to spend on shells

Even using secondhand stuff the cost soon mounts up. I've nearly finished another snare. It's a cut-down Prem tom I had mahog/rings (no cost), mint Prem 2000 cast hoops off da bay, damper I had knocking about, lovely repro tailplane lugs (new from oop norf, but not expensive at all), new throw and butt at very good price from Latvia, new heads on offer from Rockem, wrap from ST left from previous job, oh, and new Puresound Blaster snares also from Rockem. About £130-worth in all so far. Just going out to get some 1.5mm ply for the liner. Yes, its going to be a Resonator style thing.

If anybody is after some cheap lugs - the BDC sent out an email yesterday with 3x Peace snare/tom/bass legs for £5. Not the most attractive, but functional!
