Does anyone wonder how they "come off" or appear to others on the forum (or other forums)? Is there a significant gap between how you think of yourself in person and how you appear to others on this or other forums? Do you believe your "forum identity" reflects well who you are?

I'd say there is a gap between the two, for me.
I've appeared selfish and whiny at times. I think I can sometimes come across as a bit arrogant as well. I don't think that's a true reflection of who I am but I have read some things I've written on here before, wondered why I wrote them and wished I hadn't.
When you get caught up in your own little world and write things, you sometimes forget that people perhaps won't take what you've said in the context of who you are because they don't know you.
I don't actively try to build an identity on a forum because it's impossible to 'know' someone solely through what they've written a forum. I just say what I think at the time and hope that I contribute positively.

I've no idea how others on here perceive me. I've been here a long time but fly under the radar a bit, and don't rock the boat too much 
As far as forum identity and real life is concerned, I'm much the same person in real life as on here but I notice I'm more confident here and more comfortable 'meeting' new people. Whereas in real life I'm probably slightly more shy. |

I think I just have some unpopular opinions about: 1) religion, 2) football and 3) political correctness; which don't do me any favours when expressing them in text without the added benefit of face-to-face communication. |

Three things prompted these questions. The recent banning from the forum (let's not re-visit those issues here) and one of my posts. It struck me that a personality on the forum was seen so differently from their posts and the person in 'real life.' So much nuance, tone, intent and personality is lost by reducing self to simple text. I know my snarky posts (which are never intended for harm) are supposed to be playfully contentious--I like a bit of back and forth. You get closer to 'the truth.' It struck me that after many years and over a thousand posts I have not garnered enough connection, interest, or respect to comment on my band's CD release. (No tears here--and I certainly know other factors at work--not interested in the music, I rarely comment on other's music, don't post for months then a bunch then disappear, don't like it and refrain from criticism, reluctance to comment, etc, etc) But it got me thinking about who I am here and elsewhere. I believe I'm better at non-net relations. I can relate to Sharklaar and metallicpearl's comments.
And someone took some of my comments on facebook pretty hard yesterday. I seem to lack a certain touch in the cyber-world. |

I think I come across a bit thick and hope a bit dopey and harmless, i must admit there are forum users that i have thought this person is just a ..... but i tend to read the post, read it again and then read it again an most of the time my view changes quickly
Take the time to read it and ACTUALLY read it and not skim the post and it reads very differently

DCR, I see what you mean, you only have to look at the 7 posts above this one..  It's hard not to take things personally sometimes, when a post gets ignored or you seem to have an opinion everyones else disagrees with, but if that happens a few times in a thousand posts then it's not THAT big a deal. That's why I say I say I fly under the radar aswell, because I occasionally feel I (or at least, my posts) go un-noticed at times aswell, even after almost 9 years and 7000+ posts! But, it's really like being at a big party, there's music on, there are lots of different conversations going on, some will interest you, some don't. Sometimes people don't hear or understand you, or you don't hear or understand them. Of course, there's the occasional w@nker at the party aswell but mostly everyone is nice and gets on... and you know, sometimes you need to go out and get some fresh air.
I keep coming because I like to talk drums, and I generally like the people on this forum, and the ones I've been lucky enough to meet in the flesh have been lovely. I like the format of the forum, no flashing avatars everywhere etc. But I mostly just post when I'm at work, that's one of the reasons I rarely comment on music or post in the the Youtube section, because most streaming sites are blocked at work. I also leave sporadically, a few weeks or months sometimes... sometimes it's because someone's upset me or wound me up on here. Sometimes it's because I'm going through a bit of a personal downer and I turn into a bit of a recluse and don't want to converse with anyone. Sometimes I just don't have much to say.
But anyway, I'm rambling now, as I've been typing this, at home today... I've been enjoying, very much, listening to the Sills! I don't know why no-one commented, maybe the thread got buried by other stuff, I seem to have missed it anyway, but I'm loving it, and I'm not saying that out of any sympathy or anything!! Dave, you think you're better at non-net communication, and maybe you are, maybe not. But I hope it doesn't discourage you from using the forum altogether, we probably all feel ignored a little at times, but hey that happens in real life aswell as the forum. Also I appreciate your take on things as it's always interesting to get a non-UK perspective of various issues. As for "lacking a certain touch in the cyber world" I really don't think so, there are let's say, one or two here, who lack that touch (IMO of course), but you are certainly not one of them! |

I must admit i have done this but not intentionally, sometimes there are so many posts or i am contributing to so many topics that i simply forget who i have thanked and who not
I hope too and would like to say thank you to everyone that helps and i have closed topics with a thank you but this post made me think i should really always check to make sure i have
Come to think of it isn't there forum options somewhere to thank people and give a kind of kudos points, maybe not this forum so could be wrong
To anyone who i have done this too then i apologise and thanks for the help

Me too. I love this forum. This is the only forum I participate in (and even that participation is sporadic.)

You are totally right, it's not a big deal. And I totally appreciate the humor here--people on this forum are very funny. (Gaz's 25-old malcontent apartment troll is hilarious.) And I didn't comment on that.
This isn't particularly profound, but when you think about web personas--it is just a bit odd. We relate to many many people we have not, nor will ever, meet. We have 'new' personalities--we are partly web personas. Enter Twilight Zone music.
