Not sure if it is the same chap but the drum shop in Perth did Tartan Drums a good few years back and it was built up with layers of paint to make the tartan effect. I think the guy who did the work painted presige cars for a living. Quite impressive looking if it is your sort of thing.

Lee Agnew the drummer with Nazareth had a couple of TD kits.
