What, apart from finishes, is the difference between Elite and Soundwave concert toms?

Some confusion though - the 80/81 catalogue shows Elite concert tom kits with triple flange hoops and the Soundwave lugs (ET3 and ET6 on page 3 in the Archive!)

The 78/79 brochure set shows Elite style lugs but triple flange hoops on the Elite concert toms (it also shows a B77 Elite double headed kit with triple flange hoops throughout - presumably because it included 15 and 18 inch toms which didn't have die cast hoops in those days).

Hey.....its Premier !

Thats why I posed the question.

Effectively, I could mix & match and get away with it.

Actually, looking at the detailed kit descriptions in the 80/81 catalogue, the concert toms have the same part number for both the Soundwave and Elite kits - effectively making a single concert tom range span both the Soundwave and Elite ranges. The part numbers are in the format 4nnn - suggesting they're actually Soundwave drums.

In the 78 brochure set, the part numbers are all 3-digit numbers and explicitly listed as Elite concert toms (with triple flange hoops)....the Soundwave series at that time has only double headed toms.

So....at some time around 1979...the Elite concert toms stopped and Soundwave concert toms - with Soundwave lugs and part numbers - became the offering. There is some logic to this...

I'll get my anorak.........

I have a pair of black Elite 70s concert drums in the shed (triple flanged hoops). I think they're 14" and 15" diameter. They've sat on a shelf for about three years as I don't think I'll ever use them as they are. Every now and then I think about converting them to double headed toms but I've resisted temptation so far. As it doesn't seem like they were made for too long I think I'd better leave them alone. In another 50 years time, they might be the very rare thing that some drum sniffer (who is currently in baby grows) has been searching for.
