If I were looking to spend up to £200, what kind of little jazz kit (18" bd pref) do you think that money would buy. I could spend a bit more if required, and would if the right thing came along, but having been out of this game for a while I don't really know many of the new brands (e.g. Mapex Horizon HZB - some cute looking deals on that model, but is it a POS (as it were)?)

Really, all I need is an 18" bass drum, but why not add a rack and a floor tom whilst I'm at it.

I really liked the Premier Artist Heritage Jazz kit I had (in a nice walnut finish) but stupidly sold it. Gretsch Catalina - another contender, but never seen/heard. What else?

The Mapex Horizon is ridiculously good value and sounds terrific. The Magician has one, which he's about to sell.

Yeah, I've seen a store selling the shell-packs for £279 delivered, which is very tempting. However, I prefer to buy used (not just for the savings but to help another drummist move along or up the ladder...)

OTOH I am tempted to sell the Highwood and put the proceeds of that into a top-end jazz kit. That'd be a painful decision to make, but I can't justify having two great kits... one is enough. But a second, cheap kit - yeah.

I have the Gretsch Catalina jazzer plus the snare, i bought the kit off my mate for 300 quid hardly used, even the snare can't be sniffed at, they really are a good kit and great value as opposed to cheap/nasty,,
