| I've really gone off him now lol. I've been watching his tweets and getting more and more put off buy his tattoos. I used to love them and think it was cool (the sleeves) But he seems to just keep on adding them for no reason. And its like he's trying to be skin head rob lol. Although I'm sure it hasn't affected his drumming. Nevermind, not my body! |

There's a meem doing the rounds at the minute:
'The only difference between tattooed people and non tattooed people is... tattooed people don't care if your'e not tattooed.'
They do arouse a lot of passion in people. I wouldn't have a dome piece done, and couldn't carry it off either. People that go for this kind of thing, and tattoo artists are a good example, tend to voice the need to 'cover' themselves. There is some interesting psychology there. One thing is for sure, they are not added for 'no reason'. Marking yourself permanently, regardless of how often you've done it before, is never done idly or for no reason. |

To be fair no Normal person can get away with it....
Celebrities do and that mainly because they don't need to get up at 7 everyday put on a shirt and tie and head to work. I'm fairly heavily tattooed but only places I can cover, if I had turned up for any of my jobs with a tattoo on my head I would have been sacked |

I've never met Mr Barker. However, he was good enough to give Mike one of his cymbals as an incentive to sponsor him on Sunday's marathon, so in my book he's a good lad and he's welcome to have whatever he wants tattood on his bonce : http://www.justgiving.com/mike-dolbearrun |

I still find British attitudes to tattoo's, be them body or facial, as a touch Victorian.

As I said to my dad when I had a fairly large tattoo done, if that's the only thing I'm worried about when I'm old and wrinkly, I'll consider what I've done in my life to be a success. If you spend your life worrying about what effect it'll have on you when you're old and grey, you won't have much of a life. You won't live longer, it'll just feel like it.... |

True; but in 40 years time, that is how Travis will look except his will not be Tâ moko.
Just out of interest, do you think the view that tattoo's are abhorrent by many British citizens as cultural or status driven?
In the western world, very few other countries and cultures have the same viewpoint as we have towards, for want of a better phrase; body art. I've noticed in my research on NZ there has been quite the resurgence in Tâ moko over the last decade or so.

To answer your question I think it's a cultural thing in western society, most older westerners strive to "fit in" and that means no facial tattoos. That is changing with some of the "youth" though as I see more and more younger people with tattoos on their necks and hands.
It's my understanding that ta moko are done differently to western tattoos as they are cut into the skin with chisels rather than ink put under the skin with needles. Iwonder how many of the modern exponents get it done in the traditional way? |

| Either subconsciously or not, tattoos are seen by some as only to be worn by the criminal classes or by those from the lower ranks in the military or navy. This viewpoint still stands today IMHO. |

Well, I have two half sleeves and other tattoos on my forearms. I work as a consultant (not IT) in the City and Health sector at C level. I've never been in the military and am not a criminal. Jeez, maybe I'm in a time warp or summat... |
