I'm thinking of buying a birch drum shell and building a snare - just a fun way of using some spare hardware and wrap. I've seen a shell I like from a custom shop, but there's a few thickness/ply options. I'm after loudness rather than warmth in this instance, so I'm guessing the thinner the shell the better. However, what's everyone's experiences on shell thicknesses?
If you want loudness then a thicker shell would be better. Maybe a 12mm thick shell? You could go even thicker if you wanted. Thicker shells project more and thinner shells have a more resonant, warm tone to them. Hope this helps.
