Is there a sticking patten you cannot seem to get but you know you really should be able to do it.

The next Jordan Terris Memorial Drum Festival will be Feb 24th 2013
ANY RAFFLE PRIZES WOULD BE GOOD FOR THE CLINIC

I'm with you on this one too Kev.
I've been chucking them amongst a groove on the hi-hats to try to get them to speed, but they're a nightmare to keep going continuously at speed. Sound amazing once you're there though.

I did have a really good video on this. Can't find it and can't remember the anme of the guy who did it. Someone linked it up here before. Quite a funny bloke, he says "Jean Claude Van Damme that good".

It's a super sticking for sure! One of the most useful you'll find. But uh... Hows Craig Blundell getting credit for creating the six stroke roll exactly?!

That's one of my favourite licks; use it all the time! I think I got it from Geoff Fry...

He was demonstrating at Jobeky yesterday, probably why Kev has picked up on it.

I remember really struggling with this once upon a time and the first guy who showed it to me being really frustrated at why I just couldn't grab something so "easy". The big breakthrough for me was realising that it's just the wave motion o the two hands. Get that going and the thing just plays itself - it's without doubt the fastest way I can move around the kit now.

Anyone ever tried applying it to "page 33"? Now that IS a sexy sticking!!!

Out of pure coincidence a couple of days ago I was checking out some gospel chops style videos and thought I really ought to improve my triplets around the kit and did a search for 6 stroke rolls and it came up with this. I've been on with this for two days now and I'm still struggling to get any kind of speed. I have a tendency to start doubling up the first and last accents as the swapping is really quite unnatural to me. I've found sticking the R accent on the floor Tom and the L accent on the hi hat has helped me to hear the Rhythm better, maybe something worth trying. There was some good stuff on YouTube if you search 6 strike roll though, with some nice examples.

One guy breaking it into two parts and interchanging the Rll and Lrr, to Rll Rll Lrr Rll Or Lrr Rll Rll Lrr and all sorts of swaps.

RLLRRL is one rudiment I feel competent playing at speed; but that's because I've spent more time practising it than others. Now if I can put the same time into the other rudiments I'd be set.

Totally! I really like the permutations it provides, mixing up the order of 'single single double double'.

RLLRRL - 6 stroke roll.
Two things you could try which may help:
1. As a rudiment, this is often notated with accents on the single stroke beats (RllrrL). Using Moeller 'Down' strokes will bring these out and also facilitate using 'Up' stroke movements for each double pair. If you're not familiar with the Moeller stroke system, try simply bringing the hands higher for the singles and keep strokes lower for the doubles.
2. If you can already play a left-lead 5 stoke roll, try extending this by an added R hand accent to start: R LLRRL (R llrrL), then morph the rhythm to a sextuplet/semiquaver triplet over time.
Hope this helps?

I had to learn the six stroke roll in order to nail the last section of Gadd's Variations on Crazy Army. It's been a staple in my lick vocabulary ever since.
