I've just picked up a late '60's, Niles badge, Slingerland 'Soundking' Gene Krupa COB Snare. It's 14 x 5 8 lug version and is in great condition with the zoomatic strainer working perfectly as well as the internal dampener. Shell is virtually unmarked and it's original stick saver hoops did have a minimal amount of pitting but a bit of TLC has soon got these back to as good as new.
I have added a brand new Remo Vintage Ambassador batter head, Hazy Amabassador bottom head and Puresound Blaster wires and after about 20 mins tuning it I took it out to a pub gig on Sunday.
Wow, what a great little drum. Bright & crisp yet still gutsy enough to be heard above the banjo without the need for any mic's. If I am being truthful I actually prefer it to my 402 COB which cost about three times as much. It seems to be ringy, dry, cutting yet fat all at the same time. I can't praise it high enough. I think this may be my 'go to' snare for a while.
Anybody else got one / heard one and what are your thoughts? |
