Urgent help required!! My work PC went mams-up when I switched it on this morning. It's an Asus and has all my important busniess stuff on it .
The indicator light shows the hard drive works to start with and I get a normal screen come up showing the motherboard, then Windows appears not to want to start. I get a blue Error Stop screen up which shows:
KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED Address 8046ACC8 base at 80400000, Date stamp 4344ec59 -- ntoskrnl.exe
I've tried the option to start in safe mode but it only goes back to that error screen. Seems to me from the above message that Windows is at fault rather than the hard drive. Any ideas, please? OS is XP Pro. |

| Thanks mate. I'm not in any way a computer expert, but I'll have a go at that. The second link appears to be the easiest to follow. I'm using a cluncky old Dell laptop running Vista that's been under the stairs for a couple of years! Forgot how slow it is compared with my lovely PC. |

Probably best to recover the data and then reinstall windows.
Remove the HDD and stick it in your old PC as a slave. Copy the data off it and then wipe it and reinstall windows.

Loads of videos on youtube to show you how, it is VERY simple and pretty much impossible to ruin a hard drive unless you a) unplug it when switched on b) throw it at the floor. |

| I'd put my money on a dead motherboard. Had that happen to my last PC, which was an Asus. |

| Agree with the above but make sure the master pc uses a ntfs file system or you won't be able to read the files |

Looks like the NT loader has died. You should be able to recover this from the Windows recovery console. Get in there using your install disk. Have a look at this : http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000646.htm Explains it better than me typing it all out.
Try the recovery before removing the drive to copy your data and reinstalling on another drive. A reinstallation will fix it but it probably not necessary at this stage.
If you need a hand with it let me know.
