So I'm looking at getting some cymbals soon and although I'm a fairly decent drummer, I've been out of the game quite a while so I don't feel confident with my brand knowledge.
The local music shop appears to have quite a good selection of Meinl Cymbals, however I'm unsure what the 'best' ones are, and being a firm believer of buying the best you can afford, I was wondering if someone could help me pick out some.
It's my mates uncles shop, so I'm told I'll be getting discounts hence why I'm probably using the shop rather than ebay etc.
So if I was looking at spending around £300-400 in total for hats/crash/ride what would you hope to get for that?
Thanks. |

not a great deal if you buy the top of the range, Meinl Byzance hi hats are around £250 |
Mid life crisis kicked in, drum kit bought. It's not quite like cycling though, you forget. A lot! |

| A little out of my price range then, what's the next step down, quality wise? The reason I choose Meinl in particular is due to my visit to the shop last week showed they stocked little but Meinl cymbals, for one reason or another. |

| A set of Classics go for about £350 new. Not the best quality though, you could get better from another manufacturer for the price. Paiste Alphas for £429 eg. |

I guess it also depends on what kind of music you're playing. The Mb20's appear to be well priced, but are aimed at the metal players. The Byzanze appear to be aimed at the K / Jazz world. My advice is pretty much the same for any cymbal regardless of manufacturer - hit them all and see what you like. Then choose the best one, and get some that blend with that. Then pray it's within the budget.
I've heard soundcasters are recommended, but I've not personally tried any, but you need to ask yourself really - what sound would I like?
Meinl / Paiste / Sabian / Zildjian - they're all quality products. There are other makes which you might see - Stagg is a 'lesser' make, but if you try some you can still find some fine noises for a smaller budget.
Try to avoid buying a cymbal without hitting it first. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it really doesn't. |

Yeah I know what you're saying about trying them out first, I intend to pop in there at some point this week. In relation to the music I play, I play in a light hearted covers band, so we seem to be doing stuff like 'The Kooks/Arctic Monkeys/All-American Rejects' plus anything else that comes up. So with that in mind, I'd say the more 'metal' cymbals would suit me, although I do like 13" Hats, as I like a nice controlled 'chick' noise.
@Sharklaar The Paiste's sound interesting, like I say the only reason I'm intending to use my mates shop is due to the discount I'll get, however I'm not sure what that'll be yet. I don't have a particular desire to play Meinl's, it's just what he seems to have mainly in stock. |

If they have Amun still, they may be a better option for you. They have a fuller sound than the Classics, and a bit more cut than the Byzance.
I have Byzance crashes - 16", 17" and 18", and I've used them in a variety of situations, from cafe gigs up to large outdoor concerts. They have worked well, I haven't had to overplay to get them to work, and they're still intact after 5 years of playing. Possibly I don't hit as hard as most people? |

Don't knock it - it saves you a lot of cash in the long run.
I have three Zildjian crashes (16 and 17 Z Custom, and a 17 K Custom brilliant) which I've been hitting regularly for about 12 years. I keep getting told I'm not hitting them hard enough either, but they work in all the bands I've played in, and I've not had to remortgage anything in order to replace them ever six months like I know some people have to... |

| I've been playing the same pair of Byzance hats for about 10 years now and they're still going strong. I don't hit that hard either, Zat. |

I wouldn't say I'm a hard hitter, not the softest mind you but I'm the type to worry about breaking one.
I'm going in tomorrow, so hopefully I'll have a better idea of their stock and their prices. |

Barrappboomching of this forum has a pair of Byzance hats and they are among the nicest hats I have heard. |

+1 for Byzance. I have a 22" heavy ride that still manages to crash beautifully (but very loudly ) Gorgeous cymbals. |
It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing.
