I'm starting a kit conversion with some old Tama Imperialstar drums and have been looking at swapping the triple flanged hoops for bass drum hoops. If anyone has any they're looking to sell then please contact me. I'd like a matched pair ideally.
Am I right in understanding that I would also need to replace the heads if I swapped to hoops? I'm sure I've read something about 18" tom heads having different sized collars than 18" bass drum heads. The heads are original 70's premier and Tama coated both sides and I was hoping to keep them on to minimise cost at this stage.
In the short term I'm using a Pearl conversion kit (which incidentally fits the hoop fine even though it's marketed for up to 16" only).
Gareth @ HighWood made me some for my Yammie 18" conversion. Carrera, etc. will do them too.
IIRC, Worldmax and/or Stagg do some affordable plain wood finish ones as well.

Dibs you're right, the collar/flange on a bass head is bigger or profiled differently to tom heads. Apparently the hoop can slip over the head in places. That said, I use 16" wooden hoops from ST Drums over tom heads (1 regular and 1 mesh) on my conversion and they work perfectly. I'm sure some others use tom heads on their conversions too.
If you are changing from Tom Hoops to BD Hoops (with claws) you will have to raise the lugs up off the shell, otherwise the tension rods will foul on the BD Hoop.
