Makes me wonder why cymbals are so expensive these days. A couple of years ago I could get their top end stuff for £180 - £200 tops and not it seems they've jumped to £250+. Looking at their revenue it seems they're hardly struggling...

Great article!

It's nice to see a company doing well during these tough times Fourteen generations of family management takes a lot of commitment, it would be so easy for generations following the founder to sell the company off and spend the cash.

The $ to £ exchange rates were very good a few years back. I loaded up with a few things then.

Sitting on top of the mountain isn't the most interesting bit of the climb. Sitting at the bottom aint much fun either.

And the prices of copper and tin have done nothing but go upwards the past few years. As has the cost of pretty much everything really...

Is this just marketing rubbish?
"First off, there's the literal secret - the special alloy of copper, tin, and silver that gives the Zildjian cymbals their world-renowned sound. It's a proprietary mix that Avedis Zildjian brought over with him from Turkey and handed down from generation to generation of Zildjians - and only to Zildjians.
At the Norwell factory, there's a special room that only a few people have access to, where the alloy is mixed by a trusted handful - even the company's head of research and development doesn't know what goes into the mix."

The head of R&D doesn't know what's in their cymbals? Sounds like rubbish to me. I suspect the big secret is that's actually no big secret.

^The Beeb appear to have taken all the Zildjian marketing at face value and just passed it on.
