OK knowledgeable peeps
Mrs OA & I are looking for a new car to transport her mother in, so we can get it on the Motability scheme!
The vehicle has to be wheelchair accessible, but which one?
My oen preference is a Bugatti Veyron, but that would entail fitting a towbar!
So, the shortlist is down to our affordability and the following vehicles...
Citreon Berlingo Multispace
Peugeot Partner Teepee (yes I know they are virtually the same car)
Renault Kangoo Expression
All above are 1.6 diesels
Vauxhall Combo 1.3 TD
All come with manual/auto or semi auto
Thoughts on any pros or cons please

Are the VW Caddy Maxi or Ford Transit Connect options?
If so, Caddy Maxi would be my top choice. |

my gran has the 1.6 kangoo with a winch in the back for loading a wheelchair, and despite being french its a nice enough car; doesnt do many miles but my only grief with it is it is bit noisy in the back; could probably benefit with carpet being fitted. sometimes the drop at the back for the wheelchair ramp will catch potholes, and its very disconcerting the first few times this happens!
its more basic and a little more plasticky, if you get my drift, than the 2.0hdi berlingo my mum drives |

Are you out of your mind, OA?! These are French cars.
The last one I drove was a Citroen something-or-other we hired in Lanzarotte last year. My son was driving and I was in the passenger seat. I went to get something out of my jeans pocket, which meant applying pressure to the floor to lift my ar$e off the seat and my foot went through the floor! The car had only done 800Km and the fecking floor collapsed.
Previous to that, years ago, son had a lovely looking sporty Renault 16v, brilliant looking car and a great drive ... when it was going. The cam belt broke at 40-something-k miles and the electrics were dire. He gave it to me and I used it for work for a while. An engine cutting out completely in the outside lane of the M25 at 70 (slightly plus, that is) mph is quite alarming. It did that several times before I ran out of patience with it.
Did have one good Renault years ago -- a Dauphine Gordini, but that had been built in their north London factory before it burnt down. |

Sis and Bro-in-Law love their new Skoda Roomster, any use for you? He wanted a powerful Audi, but she insisted on a practical car, he tried it out very begrudgingly but was very pleasantly surprised.

Ah but they're not! They are French vans converted to passenger use, less fussy and more reliable. Friend has a Berlingo Desire (top of the range) and it really is well appointed and detailed. Even a heated box under the passenger seat to keep pies and pasties warm. |

We have one in our Toyota and it has an ice maker as well !!
We are leaning more towards the Puegeot version as it seems better appointed. all vehicles come with full servicing, maintenance, tax, insurance for 5 years, including mot's when required!! then a replacement if required.
The Skoda looks great but the conversion costs are high.

Out of that lot, I'd have the Vauxhall Combo 1.3 TD, for the simple reason it's not French.
That said it'd be worth finding out who makes the 1.3TD engine. My neighbour had a Vauxhall Vivaro van which had a Renault diesel engine in it (complete with the Renault logo on many of the components!) and some of the diesel Grand Vitara's my wife has been looking at also have Renault engines, FWIW my neighbour had no end of trouble with the Renault engine in his Vivaro, and now has a big VW van instead! |

| The 1.3 worries me re power, i've never been a fan of small engines and it will be carrying three people (2 large!!0 and our dogs, I just think after modifications it won't have the power. |

BB With all maintenance covered, and suitably adapted replacement should ours go in for repair, there isn't anything to lose!

| If it is an all-inclusive deal, then going French shouldn't worry you - if my company offered French cars on the all-inclusive scheme (which they don't due to the cost of repairing them), I would probably have got a 508 Estate. |

| Agree about small engines in biggish, well-laden cars. Modern 1300 engines are far better than those of 30 years ago, but still lack the grunt to get something of this size up a long steady hill without gear changes and higher revs, and that knocks MPG badly, as well as stressing the engine more. |

If you go Combo, go CDTi, not DTi.
MustangMick of this parish has a 1.3 CDTi combo and swears by it. It's a pretty nippy little van, from what I remember.

I'd go for a Caddy but I'd only want the newer shape one. Depending what I get back on my (knackered) C4, my absolute max budget is prob going to be 1800 - 2k. Looking at 2800 - 3k for a new shape Caddy.

But it is a Berlingo!! just a different badge, though uprated suspension and a lowered floor, and the ramp means that flightcases sorry wheelchairs are no problem!! |
