| I spent a week there on family holiday late 60s/early 70s. Climbed some of the way up the Old Man of Stor; everyone needs a hobby. Nice place apart from the midges and black pudding. |

We have a secret weapon to combat the midges Captain. Its called Skin So Soft by Avon, but don't tell anyone or the place will be overrun with tourists. I'm in the south, near the Malaig ferry terminal where it's green and not the rather barren landsape further north. Did I mention it was quiet? The sheep are winking at me. |

Have you seen the guy whose great-grandfather was brought up by American Indians in the USA? Skye is a small place, you'll probably run in to him somewhere. His name is Hawkeye the Noo.

| You can repel midges and skeeters, but nothing is as repellant as the black pudding we were served at the B&B. I cannot remember where we stayed, but north and west of Mallaig I think. 6 of us in a Bedford CA Dormobile, a biggish van in its day, but now almost comically small. |

Not quite the right part of the country for black pudding. The best black pudding in all the world comes from Stornoway.

I was in Skye 2 years ago and had a good time even had Smoked Salmon and Scrambled Eggs at our B&B, very tasty indeed.
Last weekend we were in Orkney for my *2nd birthday and that was a superb trip. Lots of history from thousands of years ago up to the 2 World Wars. Hope to return and tour some of the other islands. Oh and the Orkney Oatcakes, Cheddar, Ice Cream etc etc |

Ive made the transition from big bustling, noisy city to total feckin silence too quickly methinks. The silence is freaking me out big time. Their isnt a single solitary noise to be heard. My phone went earlier and I nearly sh:t myself. I will get used to it, I'm delirious from lack of sleep/jetlag and I did come here to get peace to work. On the upside, I've been invited to a do at the local hall on Friday night to which I shall bring a guitar. Not bad, only been here a day and I've got a gig. Apparently musicians meet up at each others houses and play for hours. They probably only do it to break the feckin silence.

| I know what you mean about silence, peace is great but silence is literally disquieting when you are used to cities. I stayed with relatives in South Wales and had trouble getting to sleep because I felt like I was in a padded cell. New York to Skye is quite a contrast! |

Well you don't sound too sure about the silence yet RT, but enjoy and make the most of it!! It's a beautiful part of the world and I'm sure you'll enjoy your wee jam session, these impromtu wee folky get togethers can be great fun, and I'm sure you'll be made to feel very welcome
David DMC, happy belated birthday! We were on Orkney last year too, but just a daytrip with friends who live in West Mey in Caithness (their house looks across the Pentland Firth across to Orkney!). Richard and myself made a bit of a 'pilgrimage' to the Highland Park distillery while the wives and kids explored the town. You're right about the history, I'd love to go back and spend some more time there.

It certainly is a beautiful place. I had been told the road from Fort William to Mallaig was a nice drive, but that was a bit of an understatement. It was breathtaking. I've been here a few time before, but had a gaggle of kids and dogs and wasn't as isolated as this. Its just Me and Judy the Yorkie this time. She is out chasing Haggis as I type.
Been to Orkney too. Went to Skara Brae, but they don't allow anyone near the actual site. Cant blame them really. |

| Just last night I was looking at the possibility of flying up to Inverness for a long weekend at some point over the summer, hiring a car for a few days and just generally exploring that part of the world (I haven't seen much of Scotland outside of Edinburgh). I might not get as far west as Skye, but... still worth it? Any recommendations? |

Oh aye, worth a visit. Inverness itself is a lovely town, we really like it anyway, plenty of B&B's, pubs and restaurants. If you're driving then you're close enough to Aviemore and the Cairngorms, great for a bit of walking, mountain biking or just take a trip up the funicular railway to the Ptarmigan, the highest restaurant in the UK. There's also the Boat of Garten Osprey Centre, Loch Insch watersports centre, steam train from Aviemore to Boat of Garten etc. Alternatively you could drive round to the other side of the Cairngorms to Braemar/Linn of Dee which is a gorgeous place (and where Balmoral Castle is if you're into that kind of thing). You're also close to Loch Ness of course, and a wee bit north of Inverness there are some lovely wee towns like Tain and Dornoch. If you're going with kids the Landmark in Carrbridge is superb and the Highland Wildlife Park in Kingussie is worth a visit.
Anyway, yes, well worth a visit, but you'd have to keep your fingers crossed for some nice weather!! |

A few years after our holiday on Skye we had another on Mull. The highlight was walking along a big beach we encountered the only other people on it, who turned out to be old friends of my parents, and they were staying with friends on Inchkenneth isle. They invited us to spend the day with them and took us out on their boat to see Fingal's Cave on Staffa, and other isles, a fantastic cruise. Back at their house they gave us a great dinner and showed us their collection of Thorens pin-barrel and pin-disc music boxes, beautiful brass machines in large wood and glass cabinets. I was allowed to operate these, changing discs and barrels. About 3 years ago there was a programme about the 1930s society girl Unity Mitford, and it transpired that she had been a groupie of a notorious German with an odd moustache, and these were given by him to her. They filmed the music boxes still in the same house, and my skin was crawling:

I just found out why you went to Dunvegan. The Clan Donald centre is near here so I popped in for a look and there is a lot of reference to the MacLeods of Dunvegan. You guys have some history. Plenty to be proud of.

Funny you should mention Mull Captain. I'm here for a month to prepare, then it's over to Mull to make a record. Never been before and really looking forward to it. Fabulous musicians, no time or financial restrictions and a beautiful setting. The only pressure is me coming up with the goods. It's a big record for the guy, his first solo album sold very well, so this one will need to at least match it, but I'm up for the challenge. When I was asked to do this I had to check Google maps to see where Mull was exactly, which is pretty pathetic for a Scotsman. I particularly want to see Fingal's cave. I expect there will be boat trips around the Islands. Be a tourist for a while instead of running around at 100 miles an hour. If theres anything on Mull of interest, feel free to enlighten me. (said the Scotsman to the Englishman)
I'l give handling Adolf's box a miss though.

Tobermory is very petty and the water is (when I was there) incredibly clear: drop a stone off the harbour wall and watch how long you can still see it. We made the short crossing to Iona which is/was a nice visit, lots of hippy types there at that time. Fingal's Cave is certainly worth a look and you will see the Dutchman's Hat and other isles around, but they are far enough out that conditions can be rough, we were lucky with only moderately choppy seas (!) and skipper managed to get us pretty much into the mouth of the cave. Waterproof camera is a must! I think it was Mull where we saw a Chekhov play at Britain's smallest theatre (?). We did a lot of canoeing as Dad and I had just made a plywood Ottersports 2 seater kayak from a kit which we took up on the roof rack of dad's old Rover 100 P4. It is still going nearly 40 years later, in fact I rescued a disabled legless canoeist in Cornwall about 5 years ago in it! Apart from the ride on a Caledonian MacBrayne ferry I don't remember all that much about Mull, and there have probably been changes, but I am sure you have a great time. Congrats on getting the gig. VERY jealous! Are you drumming, guitaring, ukeleling, singing?
Edit: there's a TV ad at present and a shot near the end shows a sea-plane coming into land over a fishing port, and I am pretty sure it is Tobermory. |

I suppose if it came down to it I'm a fraction English- Born and bred in Aberdeen to a Mother born in Yorkshire to a Scots mum and English Dad. Whats that a quarter? Does'nt really matter, I can turn the Doric on at the drop of a hat!! |

No idea. Theres some people in Livingston I'd like to see, but this is pretty open ended and I cant plan anything. My daughter is in Fife and it would be more than my life's worth not to drop in there. By the way I just heard on the radio a body has been found in the street in Broxburn. Pyothall Road. ......up to the Isle of Skye, I'm 6'2 and I'm awful shy, all the lassies shout 'och aye who's that fricking weirdo' (Some of the lyrics by Andy Stewart)
New York to Heathrow to Glasgow to Skye. The silence is deafening.
You gonna have time to drop in on West Lothian on your trip?
No idea. Theres some people in Livingston I'd like to see, but this is pretty open ended and I cant plan anything. My daughter is in Fife and it would be more than my life's worth not to drop in there. By the way I just heard on the radio a body has been found in the street in Broxburn. Pyothall Road. What's that all about?
give us a shout if you get down here! Had'nt heard that but did hear a lot of sirens earlier, shall investigate forthwith....... |
