I have recently gone to this way of tuning, no damping in the kick, maybe just a Force one batter and an ambassador or Aquarian classic clear on the resonant side. I can really appreciate why Mr Bonham went for that method and surprisingly the drum out front, still produces reasonable bottom end. Getting volume on the kick seems to be a constant headache and i dont play into the head, always off. It works on any reasonable bass drum, so its about two turns past wrinkles out on the batter, not the lowest note, then the front slightly higher,no port either, the previous tuning would not work for me, however microphones is probably the only real cure

Does adding a mic port make any real, discernible difference to the overall sound?

If its no bigger than say 4 inches you wont lose much tone and get better pedal control its just that a full front head thats higher up projects sound better than a loose one it controls the movement of air, you could use a felt strip on the batter side, also their is a loss of attack without a port but you get that big round sound, either one works well ported is more realistic for micing up.

Keith Carlock says on his DVD that he uses an open, ringy bass drum sound in smaller unmiked venues because it actually sounds a lot fatter out front once the rest of the band are playing.

Having had the pleasure of seeing him play in a small London venue I can report this certainly does seem to be the case!
