Hi Guys,

i have a premier artist heritage (in dark wood) bop kit that i want to wrap. Any tips on removing the lacquer and getting the shells into a suitable state to be wrapped? I am planning on doing this myself, is this rather fool-hardy of me? or is it best left to the experts(who will charge a considerable amount).

many thanks.
Tim

Good Afternoon,
Why do you want to remove the lacquer Tim?
Just clean and key the existing and wrap straight on top.
I have one of these in Topaz, tis a lovely finish!

Don't bother trying to strip the lacquer - it's most likely a polysomething or a UV-cured, acid-catalyzed super finish which will need a nuclear bomb to shift it. More trouble than it's worth. Just bung the wrap over the top.

ah ok, i was under the impression that this was a crucial part of the process, but i guess not? when speaking to various companies getting quotes they factored this in as an additional expense. Have you guys wrapped your own kits?

Happy Lunchtime,
Yes Tim, loads of them. As long as you have two hands and a brain you should be fine.
Can't think why any companies in this business would want to strip the lacquer either.

If you use contact clue, and really wants to make sure it bonds, you can roughen up the surface a bit. A guy on the danish forum has just taken the coating off a Pearl MMX-kit, that was professionally coated dirctly on the lacquer - and it just peeled off, without leaving any residue on the shell. A pointer that it hasnīt really worked.

Or use a professional double-sided glue like 3M 9088 - that works, isnīt a hazard to your health, is less messy and stressfull. It doesnīt harden up as glue does, so might take a little resonance out of the drums, but on shells that arenīt VERY thing the difference is unlikely to be hearable.

I have done 4 kits - still a beginner.

I've wrapped lots of drums. A nice clean laquer shell makes the job easier and if you are use a low bond tape the kit can always be put back to standard

I agree with everyone else, no need to get rid of the lacquer. Tape will work fine on top it, contact cement works on anything!

Delmar make quality wraps, but there are others that are just as good and cheaper. Stdrums have a good selection. Highwood have some new wraps which look pretty good!

Ah, highwood have a few more. I'm after a teal sparkle. I've emailed two companies now asking if they have it/can cut to the size I need but no such luck(Neither responded)

I wonder if highwood could supply me with some? Hmmm...

Have you tried drumbitz or ST drums?
I emailed a couple of companies who haven't responded. More recently I have emailed Gareth at Highwood. Hopefully he will be able to supply me with the wraps I want for 3 snare drums.
Drumbitz got back to me very quickly but didn't really have in stock what I fancied. If Gareth can't help I'll contact ST drums.
