Yeah I've been playing a Mapex Walnut snare for years. Absolutely love the sounds I can get out of it! |

Checked out your site, very nice true solids.
I have a walnut segment shell drum, and while it is woody sounding it has the cleanest overtones of any wood snare I have played.
It is great if you are playing music that uses a lot of cross stick, with mine I have over two and a half inches of of usable cross stick.
While the sound of the stroke is big and full it also has the shortest note of any snare I have owned/played.Which I would imagine would be great if playing fast articulate passages, like in classical music.
Couple questions,How and how long do you cure the wood, and do you route the shell out and then cure it? I have heard that even if the wood is expertly picked and cured that you can get vertical cracks, although that may vary from differing wood species? I have also heard that that will not always affect the sound /performance. |

| Thanks for responding.Hovland Drums use a secret curing method exclusive to us.Hovland shells are carved Green(wet)fresh from the forest then cured. No Cracks allowed.A cracked shell will not sound good,it`s like cracking the head stock on a guitar.I have lifelong wood workers scratching heads wondering how I get the shells to not crack. That`s why our shells carry a lifetime warranty. Please tell all of your friends about us.KH |
