Hello Chaps, advice/suggestions needed........
I have a Yammy DT3, the one with the proper hi-hat stand, etc and it has served me very well. However, I want to upgrade now. So, would love to hear what you knowledgeable chaps recommend if I want a definite step forward.
I'm not so much worried about the brain part as I'm not going to really do much more than choose a decent acoustic kit sound. However, I do want mesh heads, a proper hi-hat feel, and decent e-cymbals. I also don't need more than 1-up, 1-down and 3 cymbals to mimic my acoustic set-up.
The other key thing is I want something that has a small footprint, and certainly no bigger than my existing DT3.
So, what are my options for a budget of around a grand? I'm happy to consider the big brands or the custom guys.
Thanks in advance! (and apologies if this is not posted in the right section) |

Welp, you could look at ordering some drums from Jobkey and picking up a TD-12 brain and some cymbals pads from eBay? The Jobkey drums - if you were to have 10" pads and 12" kick - would probably not even run you for £500. A TD-9/12 brain would see you about £300/£500 and then some cymbal pads would be another couple of hundred.
Alternatively, you could look at a 2nd-hand TD-9 or TD-12 kit as they'd be perfectly serviceable for your needs, I recon.
Sent you a mail, BTW. |

| If you could do the Jobkey in your budget what more do you need? Those things are the business! |

| I love the look of the Jokeby kits, but big issue with them is the space required. I have to get something that doesn't take up more room that a typical e-kit, as I have only a small floor area available. Or do they do custom stuff too? Couldn't see it on their site? |

| It's your choice as to sizes, drop them an email and chat, they are such nice people and can run through your options as to what is best for you, Yamaha won't do that, nor many other manufacturers. |

| If you want a small footprint with mesh heads consider building or converting a bop kit. I've done mine for around about two hundred quid all in. Stage Master drums, 16", 8", 10", Mapex 10" snare. I already owned the snare so don't include it in the build costs along with a couple of cymbal stands that are required. Using the 16" as a bass drum and the 8 and 10 as toms I ordered Zed mesh heads from Rockem, a Pearl JG-16 riser from Thomman, Ddrum Redshot triggers from DJM (online retailer) and a second hand Alesis DM5 from Ad Trader. I made my own loom from bits of cable I had and stereo jacks from Maplin but you can buy Yamaha looms from Rockem. I kept the DM5 cymbal pads and hi hat controller and sold the rest. Works perfectly well an far more comfortable and realistic than my previous TD3 KW which was also very good. |

| Why not buy one of the Yamaha upgrade packs and add the latest e cymbals and silicone pads? That way you keep the brain and frame and get the latest tech. |

| Thanks guys, both interesting options. I don't think I have the skills or space to convert a bop kit, but upgrading what I have is worth looking into. |

You do (skills)
The cable plugs up between the trigger and the module, same as your Yamaha. Changing mylar heads for mesh is just like changing old heads to new. That's all there is to it. |
