I put a Remo pinstripe on a PP kick drum with falam slam patch with towel damping a la Simon Phillips, result.... mint! Esp for a budget drum. Put same on Tama birch Starclassic, result....crap! tuned up,tuned down, can't get a decent rock thud with a touch of impact sound. The reso's on both drums are cheapie's though and I have ordered an Evans EQ 2 for the Tama.
I use Iron Cobra's with wooden beaters.
I'll try and dig out Martin Ranscombes Rhythm mag series but if anyones got any advice to offer I'd be more than grateful. |

| I use a piece of lightweight foam, about an inch thick and maybe 15in wide, lay it along the bottom of the drum so that about two inches each end is resting in contact with each head. Gaffer tape to the head and get a great 'thud' sound with the reso tuned as low as it'll go without any wrinkles, batter medium-tight. SKII batter and Aquarian Classic ported reso, on a Tama Superstar. |

| gdrumfoot, you may have goosed the head if the PP bearing edges were too Sharp or the bass drum out of round. |

| i assume you have experimented with tweaking the tuning? just like a good TV can sometimes have a worse picture because it shows up the flaws in the signal, some drums are just really fussy about their tuning. Dont mean to patronise, just suggesting =) |

| Some heads just don't work on some drums. I spent ages trying to find a sound I really liked for my C&C kit, but eventually gave up. I gave it one last chance with smoe pinstripes, which are sounding absolutely amazng on it. |

 I would try a REMO Powerstroke 3 batter side and enough damping for the thud. Mike hole on reso if needed - handy for experimenting with damping materials  |

Personally, I get an awesome thud out of a 20" EMAD on my RC 9000.
Not sure if I'd go for a pinny on a bass drum. The theory's good, but for some reason it just doesn't cut it.

put a pinny on the batter and front tune the batter til you get a note and then tune the resonant side to just above wrinkle and dont use damping accept a slam patch, thats how Pierre van der Linden from focus tunes wide open and it sounds awsome, the ring you hear wont be evident once the band kicks off.quote:

This has always worked for me on every kick I have ever tuned, so thought this might be helpful -
Put a medium heavy pillow at a 90 degree angle inside the shell, with half the pillow resting against the head (the 'upper' part of the 90 degrees), and the other part of the pillow lying along the shell (the horizontal part of the 90 degress). Ie an L shape. Attach the pillow to the shell - I use two strips of velcro, one on the shell, the other on the pillow. BUT don't do anything else. This then allows the part of the pillow touching the head to move away as the beater strikes it, then fall back against the head. This allows the head to resonate just enough as it is then dampened by the returning pillow. It works like a 'gate'.

For dampening I use a length of cone-sound insulation foam that I picked up for a pound or two from a packaging shop.
It's an 18" Bass drum so the foam is 5" by 20" so that it sits nicely up the sides. |

A couple of ideas which might be of use...?
- Try starting with no damping whatsoever in the drum and experiment with tuning only to get as close to a sound you like as you can - then think about what else that sound needs.
- Don't fall into the trap of only ever trying to make it sound like your other drum! Allow your Tama drum be what it is and to deliver its own distinct voice.
