Having now bought an M series that was only advertised as an M series,how do I determine which M series it is when to all intents and purposes it looks just like my V/VX series baring the finish?

depends when it was made.... The first M series was neither M Maple nor M Birch - just M - that's what I have. Not even sure of the construction. I believe they are basewood with a single outer maple ply but I'm not 100% sure - TBH I don't care, tuned well they sound great.....
