Does CDD get that distinctive groove playing behind the beat on the backbeat.

He has a groove/timing/feel that makes my skin feel like it's slithering all over my body - in a disconcerting but not unpleasant way.

He seems to be rock solid with the overall timing but stretching things to beyond the usual limits within that.

Am I on the right track here?

Two Toms

In terms of his timing - a lot of the R&B hip-hop stuff he does including the D'Angelo gig is based around the way J Dilla, a hip hop producer went about his thing - in a word (or two) its NOT quantized in the slightest - CDD has translated it to the kit - its really f******g difficult to play.

Think of it in these terms

A. Play the snare smack bang on it
B. Play the "1" on the kick a 32nd note late - try playing a flam where the right hand is on the one and the Kick late
C. Play an in-between the cracks feel ala Stanton Moore on the hi-hats - half way between straight and swung
D. Limb variations on the above when you've cracked that

Also listen to

Fantastic Vol 1 by Slum Village
Like Water for Chocolate by Common
So Far So Good (indv track) by J Dilla - listen out for the hi-hat shoop - is it early or late - not sure

Also Out of Time....Out of Mind..on the latest Erykah Badu album - not a Dilla thing but certainly the same feel - its long but bear with it.

Anyone else

No Toms

Thanks for that Richard - I'll be checking out all of that.

I've been trying out the snares instead of toms thing, too. I have 10/12 and two depths of 14.

TwoToms - No Toms! LOL
